Since the 1980s, extra teaching and learning have existed. Many schools have organized surprise inspections and disciplined teachers who violated the rules. However, as time went on, extra classes became more numerous, sophisticated, and difficult to control. Some teachers "taught in secret", while some parents "sponsored" classes...
"Three notes" become excellent students
A parent who is a former student of mine, whose child is in elementary school, said: "In my free time, I checked my child's studies and saw that he was good at reading, writing, and math. His grades were reported to be 5 or 6 points. Every time I met my child's teacher, she always reminded me, 'He's still weak.'" However, after sending my child to extra classes with the homeroom teacher, his grades skyrocketed to 9-10 points after just a few sessions.
"My child has made progress after one or two months of studying, that's fine. But after just three notes, from 'poor student' to excellent, is that what extra study is all about, teacher?", the parent smiled sadly. The question surprised me, making me worried about the image of the teaching profession in the face of worrying changes.
The picture of extra teaching and learning has many dark corners that shake the belief ineducation .

Tutoring children myself because the school does not allow repetition
Another parent asked to let her child stay in first grade because she saw that her child still could not write her name. However, the school refused, saying that "there were no students who had to repeat a grade". With no other choice, she decided to let her child stay home from school for more than 45 days and teach him from the beginning. Her child practiced writing and doing math with her mother. He read slowly and then gradually got faster, wrote his name neatly, and no longer worried about addition and subtraction. As a result, her child made significant progress and caught up with the program.
"It's okay to be one year behind in school, as long as your child has solid knowledge," the parent said in tears of happiness. Now the child is in 8th grade, behind his peers in the same year, but for this parent, in order for his child to have solid knowledge, being one year behind in school is okay.
When scores are "attached" to extra classes
A student recounted that when he was in 6th grade, after taking extra classes at his regular teacher’s house, he discovered that the test questions in class were the same as the practice questions in the extra class. There was even a student who only got 5 points on the test in class but when he took the test again in the extra class, the result was changed to 9.
When this student was in grade 12, when choosing a major and university, I suggested that she study education. She was silent. When she got home, she sent me a long message, telling me about her past trauma.
T.D, a 10th grade student at a specialized school, said he intentionally did not take extra classes with the teacher who was teaching his regular classes. "I want to be evaluated on my true ability, and not be influenced by the teacher's 'suggestions' during the test. Moreover, studying with two different teachers helps me learn more approaches," he said.
Some classmates also have similar choices. But there are also students who choose to take extra classes with regular teachers because of the continuity in lectures, which is convenient for studying and reviewing.
Student V. went to the board to solve a math problem by simplifying an inequality he learned in an extra class. The teacher in the regular class did not recognize it and asked loudly: "Who wrote this?". The whole class was silent. After solving it himself in a different way, the teacher got the same result as the student but in a more complicated way.
Such situations cause psychological damage to students, create conflicts between teachers and affect the reputation of the school. Such "dark moments" on the podium tarnish the image of teachers.
Extra teaching and learning are not entirely negative, but if not well controlled, they will distort the educational environment.

Separation is necessary
Looking at the whole picture of extra teaching and learning, it is necessary to separate extra teaching from regular students.
Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training prohibits teachers from giving extra lessons to students they are teaching in their regular classes. This is a necessary boundary to protect fairness and objectivity in education.
To end the widespread practice of private tutoring, many solutions are needed: improving teachers' income, improving the quality of regular teaching hours, innovating assessment methods, and building trust among students and parents.
Extra teaching and learning are not entirely negative, but if not well controlled, they will distort the educational environment.
