Burning tongue, numbness, changes in taste or dry mouth can be caused by vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to weak bones, bone deformities, muscle cramps, fatigue and mental health problems. Here are some signs in the mouth that can help you recognize a lack of this micronutrient.

Mouth burn

Burning mouth syndrome causes pain with a hot, burning, or tingling sensation on the tongue. The person may also develop small blisters in the mouth. This condition does not occur suddenly but usually progresses gradually over time.

Change in taste

Vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining the sense of smell and taste. A 2020 study from the University of Maryland, USA, found that vitamin D deficiency may be associated with changes in taste and smell, especially in older adults.

Numb tongue

Vitamin D deficiency causes low blood calcium levels, leading to numbness and loss of taste in the tongue.

Dry mouth

Decreased or impaired saliva production can cause dry mouth. Vitamin D deficiency can cause dry mucous membranes in the mouth, leading to sores in the mouth and on the tongue. In some cases, people may have dry, itchy skin on their face or develop eczema due to an immune system disorder.

Tooth decay

Vitamin D helps maintain healthy teeth and gums. People who are deficient in this vitamin may experience tooth decay, sore gums, and bad breath.

To fully absorb vitamin D, the diet should include salmon, fish, yogurt, mushrooms, orange juice, cod liver oil... Strengthen bones by adding calcium-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables and dairy products. Adding vitamin K, magnesium and zinc to the diet also helps speed up the absorption of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is also known as the "sunshine vitamin" because the body produces this vitamin when exposed to sunlight. Sun exposure for about 20 minutes, especially between 6-8 hours, is good for the skin. Quit smoking and drinking, limit stress to avoid hindering the body's absorption of vitamin D.
