Vietnam's sports participated in the 15th SEA Games in 1989 in Malaysia, marking the return of Vietnamese sports to international competitions. The Vietnamese sports delegation participated in the 15th SEA Games with 42 athletes in 8 sports including athletics, swimming, shooting, table tennis, boxing, gymnastics, tennis and women's volleyball.

Shooter Ngo Ngan Ha won the gold medal in the women's standard air rifle event at the 15th SEA Games in 1989 with a score of 583 points. The Vietnamese shooter also won a gold medal in the women's team at the tournament. Shooter Ngo Ngan Ha is recognized as the first athlete to win a gold medal for Vietnamese sports at the SEA Games since our re-integration. During her career, shooter Ngo Ngan Ha won 6 gold medals at the SEA Games. After ending her athletic career, she participated in coaching and was a member of the coaching staff of the Vietnamese shooting team before retiring.
The next milestone to mention is at the 2016 Olympics, shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh achieved a historic achievement with 1 gold medal and 1 silver medal. This is still the best achievement of Vietnamese sports in the Olympic arena. Shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh's gold medal is considered a miracle that marks the mark of Vietnamese sports in the world arena. After retiring, shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh currently holds the rank of colonel and holds the role of head coach of the shooting team at the Military Sports and Physical Training Center.
At ASIAD 2018, Vietnamese shooting won 2 bronze medals in the 10m air pistol mixed pair event of Tran Quoc Cuong - Le Thi Linh Chi and 10m mobile rifle men's event of Ngo Huu Vuong.
At the 2023 ASIAD in Hangzhou (China), Vietnamese shooting continued to reap impressive achievements, including 1 gold medal by shooter Pham Quang Huy (men's 10m air pistol); 1 silver medal by Ngo Huu Vuong (10m standard portable air rifle); 1 bronze medal by Pham Quang Huy, Phan Cong Minh, Lai Cong Minh (men's 10m air pistol team).
Most recently at the 2024 Olympics, shooter Trinh Thu Vinh, participating in the Olympics for the first time, won 4th place overall in the women's 10m air pistol event and reached the final of the women's 25m sport pistol event.
In a press interview, former shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh commented: “Thu Vinh’s competition results reflect her efforts. However, in high-level sports competitions, winning a medal depends on many factors. Thu Vinh’s achievements are already very impressive, opening up many opportunities for future development. The current issue is how to train Thu Vinh to continue to develop her achievements, possibly winning an Olympic medal.”
The Olympic champion once expressed his opinion: “It is not easy to say how long it will take for shooting or Vietnamese sports to have an Olympic gold medal. But I believe that with the number of potential athletes currently available, if invested in comprehensively, combining many factors, Vietnamese shooting will have an Olympic medal. I am a special case. The gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, I think, is beyond the thinking of many people, it is the crystallization of many factors. At that time, I received very good investment from the locality and the country.”
In the immediate future, Vietnamese shooting will have an important goal at the 33rd SEA Games. The Vietnamese shooting team is one of the earliest national teams to assemble. The team has 6 coaches, 1 expert and 45 athletes. With a large number of different events, the shooters will have to compete fiercely and make more efforts. This is the basis for the coaching staff to evaluate after each stage, thereby screening personnel and selecting the best athletes to meet professional requirements. Shooting is one of the key sports that receives great attention and investment from the industry. Therefore, the target for this sport at the 33rd SEA Games is to win 7 gold medals.
