Responding to VnExpress , Mr. Ngo Tan Luc, Vice Chairman of Phu Quy District People's Committee, said that the number of visitors has recently "increased too quickly", especially on holidays and weekends. During the recent April 30 holiday, nearly 10,000 visitors came to the island. In 2022, Phu Quy Island welcomed more than 95,000 visitors, a sharp increase compared to the district's target of welcoming about 45,000 visitors by 2025.

According to Mr. Luc, Phu Quy currently basically meets tourism needs, being able to welcome about 2,500 visitors a day, but the current growth rate "is a difficult problem" for a small island district of only 16 square kilometers with about 29,000 people and scarce fresh water resources.

Mr. Luc realized that Phu Quy "is behind many localities" in tourism development, "does not have much experience" and "is still learning as we go". "We still assess ourselves as not really professional, still spontaneous", he said.

Phu Quy has nearly 60 accommodation establishments in operation with a total of nearly 700 rooms, including nearly 20 hotels, more than 30 motels, and about 10 houses with rooms for rent. The district also has about 150 dining establishments.

Garbage is one of the problems the district is facing. During peak season, many tourists report littering all over the pier, coral diving spots, pristine beaches... Phu Quy has invested in building a waste treatment plant with a capacity of processing 70 tons of garbage per day, organizing garbage collection on the island (about 30 tons per day) as well as in the ocean.

"But the waste situation really does not meet local requirements," he said.

Phu Quy authorities are currently focusing on prioritizing a number of solutions, including completing the district's master plan; proposing that the province have a policy and project to collect environmental sanitation fees from tourists when they set foot on the island; and implementing solutions to preserve and protect freshwater resources on the island.

Phu Quy has also opened training courses to prepare human resources for tourism on Phu Quy Island in the future.

"The district is calculating the number of visitors to match the island's capacity, with more emphasis on high-end visitors," he said.
