Doctors warn of the risk of lightning strikes during the storm season, people need to be extremely vigilant.
When there is thunder and lightning, people should quickly find shelter, such as running into the house (Photo: Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department).
Lightning often strikes high areas, mounds, hills, tall trees, large power lines, transformer stations, and deserted areas. Therefore, when seeing thunderstorms, people should stay indoors and limit going outside.
According to Dr. Luong Quoc Chinh, Emergency Department, Bach Mai Hospital ( Hanoi ), lightning can appear before or after a thunderstorm. To avoid being struck by lightning, people should pay attention to the following recommendations:
- Avoid being outdoors in open areas (wilderness) during thunderstorms.
If you hear thunder, you are within range of a lightning strike. If you are outside, you need to seek shelter immediately. Lightning can travel 10-12 miles (16-19 km) ahead or behind a thunderstorm and can appear to come out of a clear blue sky.
- When you are under a storm, avoid the highest areas and tall objects.
- Do not carry or hold tall metal objects during a thunderstorm; put down any golf clubs, fishing rods or baseball bats; put down metal objects such as baseball caps.
- If lightning has struck an area, remember that lightning can strike the same location twice.
- If you cannot find shelter, crouch down in a ball catching position. Put your hands on your knees or cover your ears (to protect your ears from thunder). If you are next to another person, keep a distance of 4.5m.
- An enclosed metal vehicle such as a car or bus can be a good shelter. Close all doors and do not touch any metal connected to the vehicle. Golf carts are not suitable shelters. Excavator operators can stay inside the cab with the doors closed and should not go outside to seek shelter.
- Even if you are inside a building, close all windows and stay away from them. Do not use landline phones and electrical devices including computers. Lightning can strike outdoor wiring and travel inside.
- Before you leave your shelter, wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning strike.
