Advantages and challenges
In our country, dragon fruit is currently one of the 40 advantageous export products of the country approved by the Government, and is also one of the 12 types of fruit identified by Vietnam as having competitive advantages. Particularly in Binh Thuan - now a coastal area of Lam Dong province (new), dragon fruit products continue to maintain their advantages when leading the country in terms of area, output and quality. The geographical indication of Binh Thuan dragon fruit is the 4th brand protected by the State with exclusive name registration national...

In the first half of 2025, the area of dragon fruit in the province remained stable at 26,300 hectares and the output was estimated at 326,000 tons, up 2.19% over the same period last year. At the same time, statistics show that the export turnover of Binh Thuan dragon fruit contributed about 6.8 million USD to the local agricultural product group, up more than 30% over the same period and reaching nearly 70% of this year's plan... However, despite penetrating many countries and territories around the world , expanding the dragon fruit consumption market abroad also faces many difficulties and challenges.
Because in the past, Binh Thuan dragon fruit participated in exports accounting for 85% of total output but only about 2 - 3% through official channels, the rest was traded through border trade and mainly exported to the Chinese market. However, this country of a billion people is also increasing its area and moving towards proactively supplying dragon fruit locally, while expanding the market to Europe, America or other potential markets is facing many difficulties, in addition to having to "compete" with Mexican and Ecuadorian dragon fruit in demanding markets... With the domestic market, the "absorption" is not high (about 15% of total output), but the price is unstable and also competes with many domestic fruits to attract consumers' choices.
Promote market expansion
Based on the actual situation, the locality has always strived to find solutions to overcome difficulties and challenges to develop and diversify the market through traditional and modern distribution channels. Such as creating opportunities for relevant parties to meet and promote the signing of contracts for the consumption of dragon fruit and dragon fruit processed products (dragon fruit wine, dragon fruit juice, dried dragon fruit - soft-dried dragon fruit, dragon fruit noodles, etc.). In addition, it also supports businesses, cooperatives, dragon fruit production and trading establishments to participate in fairs and exhibitions to promote products and cooperate to expand the consumption market outside. On the other hand, it also contributes some related contents in the Trade Promotion Program, the Industrial Promotion Program of the province and the country, etc. Thanks to that, it helps local businesses have more opportunities to promote their brands as well as connect to perfect the technological process and processing process to meet the requirements of the consumer market.
In addition to consolidating and expanding traditional markets, the local industry and trade sector will strengthen trade promotion activities for Binh Thuan dragon fruit products. Continue to organize survey and trade delegations according to the programs of central ministries and branches to learn and develop new markets to reduce dependence on the Chinese market. At the same time, promote trade cooperation, connecting supply and demand with provinces and cities in the country, thereby contributing to ensuring output for dragon fruit in the domestic market.
It is known that up to now, the Geographical Indication of Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit has been protected by the European Union (EU), the image and trademark "Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit" has also been renewed for protection by 13 countries and territories including: United States, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong...
