Irrigation works in the Mekong Delta (MD) play a role in controlling water resources, ensuring production for people and helping to form a water and land transport network.

On the afternoon of November 29, the forum on Promoting communication on rational and effective water use and ensuring water security in the Mekong Delta was held in Can Tho City.

According to the organizers, the Mekong Delta is facing huge challenges from upstream, especially investment activities in projects on the Mekong mainstream and tributaries, causing a decrease in the amount of water and alluvium to the delta.

In some localities in the Mekong Delta, irrigation works have been and are being gradually deployed to effectively regulate and control water resources.

At the forum, Mr. Le Tu Do, Deputy General Director of Southern Irrigation Exploitation Company Limited, said that this unit is managing and exploiting 5 project items in the region, including: Cai Lon, Cai Be, Xeo Ro, Vung Liem sluices and Ninh Quoi boat lock sluice with a total project area of about 1 million hectares.

"The characteristics of terrain, hydrology, and production areas of the Mekong Delta are very diverse, so each irrigation system is also diverse in function," said Mr. Do.

Accordingly, the Cai Lon - Cai Be - Xeo Ro irrigation system (Kien Giang) has the task of controlling the salinity, brackishness and freshness of water, ensuring agricultural production.

The sluices also combine with the West sea dike to form a cluster of works that proactively respond to climate change.

In addition, this cluster of projects also combines the development of road traffic infrastructure, creating conditions to promote socio-economic development in the region.

For Ninh Quoi boat lock sluice (Bac Lieu), this project has the task of ensuring salinity control so as not to affect Soc Trang province and the stable freshwater area of Bac Lieu province.

In addition, this sluice gate also facilitates the transfer of water from the Hau River to the area south of National Highway 1, Bac Lieu province and serves water and road traffic.

In Vung Liem Sluice (Vinh Long), the project aims to control salinity and high tides, creating a clean water source. At the same time, it proactively takes water, drains water, collects alluvium, removes acidity, and washes away alum to serve agricultural production.

"Another task of Vung Liem Sluice is to create a residential area, combining water and land traffic to create a complete water and land traffic network," said Mr. Do.

To ensure the projects operate effectively, Mr. Do said, the company regularly exchanges with localities about production situations and water needs.

At the same time, combine with forecast bulletins of hydrometeorological agencies to develop detailed plans for project operations.

"In addition, the company also coordinates with localities to ensure prevention of flooding, saltwater intrusion and traffic safety in the construction area," Mr. Do added.
