Developed by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries, the free tool uses the latest artificial intelligence technology and weather modelling to provide weekly rainfall, dry weather and drought risk predictions up to 35 days in advance. It is also updated daily to capture the latest changes in the climate system. According to NIWA, the tool provides long-term forecasts at a much higher spatial resolution than previously possible.

NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll said the tool increases the frequency and narrows the range of rainfall, dry and drought forecasts, providing better warnings of future dry spells.
