Accident changes thinking
For the past year, Pham Tuan Hai has been using an electric car that costs just over 300 million VND. This is the first time this player has changed cars. Unlike most of his teammates who choose more luxurious and expensive brands when buying new cars, the striker born in 1998 "puts it in reverse" when traveling with a friend that costs less and is smaller in size than his first car.

That is the pragmatism in Tuan Hai's thinking at the age of 25. Unlike the reckless time 8 or 9 years ago, Hai of the present is a very different person. He does not dye his hair colorfully, does not climb fences in the middle of the night to go out. Hai shakes his head when spending money on things that he considers to be consumables and frivolous. Instead, investing in his body with nutrition, vitamins, health measuring devices... to serve his long-term football career is the sustainable value that will accompany Tuan Hai over the years.
A notable point is that on both sides of Tuan Hai's new car are pictures of Songoku, a famous character from the Dragon Ball manga that has accompanied the 8x and 9x generations in Vietnam for decades. The striker himself, from Ha Nam (now Ninh Binh), often celebrates with gestures related to the above comic series. Tuan Hai found an interesting coincidence in Songoku. That is, his personality changed after a major event.
“In 2018, I participated in the celebration of the Gold Medal of the National Sports Festival with Hanoi. On the way back, although I did not drink to compete in the U21 National Championship with the team in Hue the next day, I had a motorbike accident,” Tuan Hai recalled. “That accident completely changed Hai “be”. From a naughty, reckless and stubborn kid, he suddenly became more mature, exemplary and professional. Just like Goku when he fell down the mountain in the Dragon Ball story,” a leader in the Hanoi club team shared.
Tuan Hai continued to confide in the events after the accident that changed his thinking: “I was taken for an X-ray. The doctor said that if I didn’t have surgery, I wouldn’t be able to play football again. Hearing this, I was scared and shivered because I had never had such a serious injury. Luckily, when I was examined at Viet Duc Hospital, the doctor said that I only needed a cast. During that time, I continued to exercise to prevent muscle atrophy. I was able to remove the cast after 28 days.
I feel lucky that I didn’t have to have surgery, lucky that it helped me wake up. I wondered if I was serious about my career. No one showed me how to recover, so I started to learn about training and nutrition on my own. Now everything has become a habit,” Tuan Hai continued.
A model worth learning from
When he was 13-18 years old, Tuan Hai was naughty. He admitted that there was a period of time when around 10:00 pm, this player waited for the team to go to bed to play video games all night. Otherwise, he skipped school in the morning. That period lasted for nearly a year. Another period in the U13 team, because he was so naughty, he was banned from training for several months. He admitted that he was once called the boss of the 1998 class at Gia Lam because of his unruly behavior. The teachers saw that and met and decided to expel him. After that, his mother went to Hanoi to take him back. His school records were also withdrawn. If it weren't for Mr. Nguyen Trong Hong - Head of the Center's football department standing up to guarantee and asking for his honor to let him stay, Tuan Hai might not have been able to pursue a career in football.
After the accident in 2018, Tuan Hai has completely changed. He does not drink alcohol or beer regularly. This player also limits fast food with a lot of fat. "It's been 5 years since I changed, now I feel much healthier and play more freely," Tuan Hai confided. "The important thing is whether you want it or not, whether you have the courage to overcome it or not, because temptations are everywhere. Now I try to sleep earlier. Buying a massage pillow is also a way to help me sleep well soon."
Tuan Hai's positive attitude in living, training and competing is recognized by coaches and colleagues. From coaches Nguyen Thanh Cong, Pham Minh Duc, Daiki Iwamasa, Makoto Teguramori, Park Hang-seo, Kim Sang-sik to a series of Vietnamese players, all recognized the professionalism of the striker born in 1998. The players even have a catchphrase: "If you want to ask for vitamins or milk, just knock on Tuan Hai or Hung Dung's door and you will be there."
Up until now, Tuan Hai has been following an incredibly strict menu, with regular main dishes such as chicken breast, boiled eggs, and fish. He also tells himself not to slack off and always reminds himself: "If you're not good enough, you have to practice more to be equal to others!"
“My point of view is that today ends and tomorrow is a new day, so we should never rest on our laurels or wallow in failure. We must try harder and make more efforts,” Tuan Hai shared his thoughts.
Desire to go abroad
For the past 2 years, Tuan Hai has been waiting for the opportunity to go abroad. Last year, when signing a 3-year contract with Hanoi, this player attached a clause. That is, he wanted the capital team to create conditions if a foreign club was interested in him. The capital team also enthusiastically supported Tuan Hai, especially the signals coming from Japanese representatives (J.League).
This summer, Tuan Hai received an offer from a club in Latvia. But because the European transfer market was closed, things did not go as expected. He affirmed that the Hanoi FC Board of Directors and himself always discussed thoroughly. If there is a reasonable opportunity, even during the important stage of the season, the club is still ready to create conditions for Tuan Hai to realize this dream.
