On January 21, in Can Tho city, the Vietnamese National Assembly organized the Francophone Parliamentary Cooperation Forum on sustainable agriculture, food security and climate change response.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy

In his opening speech, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man informed that after nearly 40 years of implementing the renovation process, Vietnam has achieved important, comprehensive and historic achievements.

Vietnam has achieved achievements in sustainable poverty reduction and hunger eradication as well as in implementing the Millennium Goals and moving towards sustainable development goals according to the United Nations Agenda 2030.

In 2024, Vietnam achieved many impressive results. Economic growth reached 7.09%, economic scale reached about 470 billion USD. Total import-export turnover recorded a record of about 800 billion USD; foreign investment attracted about 40 billion USD, of which realized FDI capital was about 25 billion USD.

In particular, agriculture is one of the important achievements that Vietnam has achieved in recent times. During the difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic, agriculture has been the pillar of the economy.

Thanks to solid investment in agriculture, Vietnam not only ensures food security but also provides food and agricultural products to the world. In 2024, agricultural, forestry and fishery exports reached a record, of which rice exports reached more than 9 million tons, reaching a value of about 5.7 billion USD.

Tripartite international cooperation

According to Mr. Man, the forum is organized to promote cooperation between countries in the Francophone community to build sustainable agriculture, ensure livelihoods for each household and food security for each country, along with responding to climate change globally.

From Vietnam's experience, the most successful approach to achieving these goals is a multi-stakeholder cooperation model, the most typical of which is tripartite cooperation.

“On one side are countries in need of support, on the other side are countries and international organizations with experience to share, and on the other side are countries and development partners with resources to finance the transfer of experience,” Mr. Man shared.

Meanwhile, President of the Francophone Parliamentary Union (APF) Hilarion Etong said that the initiative to organize the Francophone Parliamentary Cooperation Forum on sustainable agriculture, food security and climate change response demonstrates Vietnam's strong commitment.

Play an active role in promoting Francophone cooperation on important issues related to sustainable development, including: ensuring food security, developing sustainable agriculture and responding to climate change.

“Together, we can address the challenges of sustainable agriculture and food security, especially the challenges of climate change. Together, we can and must make a difference,” said the APF president.
