What standards does the World Swimming Federation set?
Ms. Le Thanh Huyen, in charge of swimming at the Vietnam Sports Administration, said that to participate in the 2025 world championship, Vietnamese athletes must meet the performance standards set by the International Swimming Federation (FINA).

Accordingly, the Vietnamese swimming team has 5 athletes who meet the B standard, including Nguyen Huy Hoang (1,500m freestyle), Pham Thanh Bao (200m breaststroke), Nguyen Quang Thuan (400m medley), Tran Hung Nguyen (400m medley), and Vo Thi My Tien (200m medley). However, each country can only send 1 athlete with the B standard to participate, so Nguyen Quang Thuan was chosen to compete in the 400m medley because he had better performance parameters than his senior Tran Hung Nguyen.
Recently, expert Gustavo has been making technical adjustments to help Vietnamese players maximize their potential. Facing very strong opponents in the world arena, each player is set a goal to reach their best performance level.
In the 1,500m freestyle event, Nguyen Huy Hoang has a B standard with parameters of 15 minutes 18 minutes 63 seconds. Since the Paris Olympics in August 2024, Huy Hoang has not participated in any international competitions. However, with what he has shown during training, the 25-year-old swimmer from Quang Binh (now Quang Tri) is assessed by expert Gustavo Piza as having the ability to achieve good performance parameters. Experience and courage on the green track are also Huy Hoang's advantages, helping him to be worthy of being the leader of the Vietnamese swimming team.
"Frog Prince" Pham Thanh Bao is also expected to conquer new performance parameters in his forte 200m breaststroke. Thanh Bao's standard B parameter is 2 minutes 13 seconds 35 and the swimmer from Ben Tre (now Vinh Long) is ready to explode on the green track in the upcoming world arena. 19-year-old swimmer Nguyen Quang Thuan represents a generation of young talents eager to surpass the milestone of 4 minutes 23 seconds 08 in the 400m medley, which is also the standard B that he currently holds. Vo Thi My Tien, the only female swimmer of the Vietnamese swimming team participating in this tournament, was honored to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics and the performance parameter achieved at the Olympics (2 minutes 17 seconds 18) brought her to the world championship in the 200m medley event.
Ms. Le Thanh Huyen said that after the World Swimming Championship, the Vietnamese swimming team will focus on the most important goal this year, which is the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand this December. According to the plan, in October, the main players of the Vietnamese swimming team will undergo international training to improve their skills before going to Thailand to compete.
