Dozens of houses burned down in a market in Ca Mau

A fierce fire burned down dozens of houses at the central market of Thanh Tung commune. Authorities suspect that a man had a conflict and slashed his wife, then caused the fire, at noon on August 22.

After 11am, smoke and fire started from a house in the central market of Thanh Tung commune (former Dam Doi district), then quickly spread to neighboring houses. Some people in the market tried to put out the fire but failed.

Most of the houses here are made of wood and corrugated iron. The area has strong winds so the fire spread quickly, creating a column of smoke dozens of meters high. After half an hour, the fire had spread to almost the entire market.

Authorities mobilized hundreds of people to put out the fire. However, the large fire area was located along the riverbank, making it difficult for firefighters to approach. Several firefighting boats and residents ran along the river to try to control the fire.

Mr. Mai Viet Trieu, Chairman of Thanh Tung Commune People's Committee, said that at around 1:20 p.m. the fire was basically under control, but the fire was still smoldering inside, and firefighters continued to spray water to prevent the fire from flaring up again.

"We are verifying and clarifying the fire caused by a jealous man in the market who slashed his wife and then burned down the house," said Mr. Trieu, adding that authorities are searching for this person.

According to Thanh Tung Commune People's Committee, the fire did not cause any casualties, but completely burned down 56 kiosks of 25 small traders.

Thanh Tung Market is located along the river bank, with about 60 kiosks selling many items. Many people build houses in the market to live and do business.
