Touching the stone stele with the words "Pyâu Peak, Lơ Pang, Mang Yang, altitude: 1,171 m..." engraved on the mountain top, I was truly satisfied and excited.
To reach the fork leading to the top of Po Yau (or Pyau), from the center of Pleiku area, we follow National Highway 19, towards the Nam Dat fork (Lo Pang commune), from there travel about 13 km more along Provincial Road 666 to reach the place. From the foot of the mountain, go up to the top about 4 km along a rather steep concrete road, winding terrain. There are two ways to conquer the top of Po Yau mountain. If you want to challenge yourself, you can climb the mountain to experience the beautiful route, or ask for a specialized motorbike from the locals.
The dry months on the plateau are the ideal time to experience the scenery of Po Yau. Sometimes you can see some cool streams from the mountains flowing through the trees and tangled vines, the water overflowing onto the rocks below, making the air always cool and the forest ecosystem here green all year round.
Po Yau Peak is named after the Po Yau stream that flows along the primeval forests. From the foot of the mountain, the first kilometer is quite easy because the road is flat and easy to walk, giving the whole group more motivation. The more you climb, the steeper the slope, the scenery embraces the mountains and hills, blurred behind the clouds.
The 4 km steep road is a “tough” journey for amateur climbers, requiring endurance to reach the top. However, the experiencer is immersed in nature, mountains and forests on every step. Looking down from above into the valley, there are winding fields, green trees covering the space, streams meandering… Especially here, it is cool all year round, very suitable for those who love to explore and love nature.
The roofs of the houses in the distance gradually become clearer and then disappear into sight. The Ba Na village, nestled on the top of a high mountain, has changed a lot since the road leading to Po Yau was concreted, making it much easier for people to travel. The scenery of the small village is like a peaceful picture in the middle of majestic mountains. There are stretches of mist drifting across the treetops amidst the dense green of the mountains and forests, creating a dreamlike yet realistic scene. What needs to be done is for everyone to join hands so that the people here can preserve their long-standing identity, from eating, living, working, farming to promoting the traditional values that their ancestors have left for generations.
From Po Yau village, travel about 2 km more to reach the waterfall named after this village. The muddy dirt road is quite difficult to travel, but the natural scenery is extremely wild and peaceful. From afar, you can feel the cool air coming from the waterfall.
Po Yau Waterfall is about 4 m high, more than 30 m wide, with a large water flow, flowing all year round, even in the dry season. This is also a source of irrigation water to help the villagers' fields grow green and fertile, and create an environment for the forest trees and vegetation here to be green. When the sun gradually sets behind the trees, the last light of the day reflects on the water, creating a sparkling and enchanting scene.
As the sky began to darken, we descended the mountain and returned amidst the highland winds blowing. Goodbye Po Yau, the village that left me with many unforgettable experiences…
The cross-country race “Conquering Pyau Peak” has taken place in recent years, not only as a simple race but also to promote the landscape and people here, inviting everyone to visit and experience this peaceful and beautiful land like a painting.
