Short story in Red Journey (Part 6): The whole family donates blood

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Not noisy, not brilliant, the blood donation journey of thousands of people is still as quiet as a stream flowing in the middle of life. There, each drop of blood is a sharing, each donation is a humanitarian act and behind that are countless small but extremely warm stories. Stories like that - simple but full of humanity have been and are contributing to writing the humanitarian journey called "donating blood to save people", illuminating beautiful living values in the community.

When blood donation to save lives is maintained, spread and becomes a cultural feature in the family, this not only contributes to saving someone’s life but also enriches the life value of each individual. Nguyen Van Linh’s family is a vivid example - where blood donation has become a part of the rhythm of life, a “red tradition”.

Short story in Red Journey (Part 6): The whole family donates blood

Mr. Nguyen Van Linh participated in blood donation.

From family beauty

The family of Nguyen Van Linh (Hoang Hoa commune) is one of the active "nuclei" of voluntary blood donation activities. Mr. Linh was born in 1968, and started donating blood for the first time in 2007. At that time, the voluntary blood donation movement was not yet popular, and many people were hesitant because they did not fully understand the benefits of donating blood. But for Mr. Linh, it was a very natural decision because during his days of training in the army and working in the Red Cross, he understood one thing: Blood can wait for the sick, but the sick cannot wait for blood. So when you are still healthy, give blood to spread meaningful things.

Donating blood is giving without losing anything, but receiving a lot in return: joy, pride, health and connections between people.

Mr. Linh shared: “Donating blood is giving without losing anything, but receiving a lot in return: joy, pride, health and connections between people.” With that in mind, Mr. Linh always donates blood once a year. Blood donation events become special times of the year, when he takes the time to give acts of kindness to help others.

Along with actively participating in blood donation, Mr. Linh often shares with his wife and children about voluntary blood donation activities, his feelings when participating in blood donation as well as the meaning of blood donation in family meals.

In his stories, he never forgets to tell about patients in dangerous situations who need blood for emergency treatment, or stories about lives extended thanks to volunteer blood drops.

His love for charitable acts and his stories have "sown seeds" in the hearts of his loved ones to "sprout" into many voluntary blood donations. His wife - Ms. Le Thi Thao (born in 1972, working at Hoang Ngoc Primary School) shared: "At first, I just listened to him and supported him in my heart. But gradually, my husband's blood donation stories have become something that is closely associated with my family. Seeing my husband do it regularly, happily, healthily and being respected by everyone, I also felt that I needed to contribute."

Ms. Le Thi Thao donates blood voluntarily.

In 2013, Ms. Thao officially participated in voluntary blood donation. Since then, every year she has actively participated in blood donation in her locality and at her work unit. Ms. Thao shared: “The first time I donated blood, I felt very strange, both nervous and happy. After that, every time I donated blood, I felt happier and more joyful. Since then, my husband and I have always maintained that special habit together, seeing it as a way to live a better, more meaningful life.”

Not only his wife but also his two children have gradually become familiar with the story of voluntary blood donation. From the questions: Why do you donate blood every year, Dad? Does donating blood hurt? Mr. Linh and Ms. Thao's two children have wished that when they grow up and are healthy enough, they will participate in voluntary blood donation like their parents.

Nguyen Truong Son (1994), son of Linh and Thao, shared: “Understanding the importance of blood donation, when I was a student, I actively participated in voluntary blood donation. When I worked in the medical industry , blood donation became a regular activity for me with the hope that my blood could sustain the lives of patients in need of blood. There were years when I donated blood 3-4 times. Up to now, I have donated blood nearly 20 times. For me, donating blood is not only a duty to save people, but also a proud continuation of my parents.”

To spread and connect the community

For Linh’s family members, blood donation has become a special language to connect them. Every time they meet, especially in July - the month of the Red Journey, the story of voluntary blood donation in Linh’s house becomes more exciting. Everyone tells each other about their blood donations, people who overcame their anxiety when donating blood for the first time, stories of saving people with the blood they received. And just like that, the way they cherish life, cherish people, has been sown in those drops of red blood.

Short story in Red Journey (Part 6): The whole family donates blood

Mr. Nguyen Van Linh encouraged people to register for voluntary blood donation.

Not only is it a beautiful family trait, each member of Linh's family also actively promotes and encourages friends, colleagues, and neighbors to donate blood. Linh shared: "Many people ask me if donating blood is tiring, and I saw someone fainting while donating blood. I smiled and said it was okay. I donate blood every year and still run like a shuttle. As long as I can donate blood, my health is still good. Just try donating."

I donate blood every year and I'm still running like crazy. As long as I can donate blood, I'm still in good health. Just try it.

With the simple sharing from the heart and the quiet but lasting actions of Mr. Linh's family members, many neighbors and colleagues who were once worried about donating blood have changed their perception, trusted the advice of Mr. and Mrs. Linh, decided to donate blood and continue to spread that humane action.

The story of Mr. Linh's family is a clear demonstration of a humane value: Every act of sharing, no matter how small, if repeated with love and responsibility, will create great power, enough to move, connect and change family members as well as the community.

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, people sometimes forget that the most meaningful thing is not material things but giving. And Nguyen Van Linh's family has silently reminded us of that with simple but inspiring actions: Donating blood - giving life.

Thanh Hoa is one of five localities nationwide to organize all 13 consecutive Red Journeys, affirming its leading position in the voluntary blood donation movement, and at the same time showing that the humanitarian spirit has become a sustainable source in the cultural and social life of the province.

With 13 years of persistently accompanying the Red Journey - from the early days with many difficulties, to now becoming a bright spot in the national Red Cross movement - Thanh Hoa not only maintains its commitment, but also strongly spreads the message of living beautifully and living usefully to all classes of people.

In just the first 6 months of 2025, Thanh Hoa mobilized and received more than 25,000 units of blood from people across the province, continuing to affirm itself as one of the leading localities in the country in the voluntary blood donation movement.
