1. The longest insect on the planet. The giant stick insect can measure up to 55 cm long including its legs, making it the longest insect ever recorded in the world . Photo: phasmatodea.com. 2. Capable of camouflaging like tree branches. With its long, slender body and bark-like coloration, the giant stick insect can blend into its natural environment to the point of being nearly invisible to predators. 3. Primarily nocturnal and very sedentary. They are nocturnal leaf-eaters, spending most of their time standing still to avoid detection, reducing the risk of attack by birds or predators. When moving, stick insects often sway in a “wind-blowing” manner to mimic a swaying tree branch, thereby increasing the camouflage effect. Photo: biolib.cz.
5. Females are larger and can reproduce without males. Female giant stick insects are significantly larger than males and can reproduce by parthenogenesis – that is, laying eggs without fertilization. Photo: biolib.cz. 6. Their eggs resemble plant seeds. Stick insect eggs are small, hard, and shaped like plant seeds, which helps them camouflage in forest environments and avoid detection by egg-eating animals. Photo: Adobe Stock. 7. Development is very slow and long. From egg to adult, stick insects undergo multiple molts over the course of several months, making their life cycle longer than many other insects. 8. A symbol of adaptive evolution. With its unique morphology and behavior, the giant stick insect is often cited in biological studies of camouflage, evolution, and survival mechanisms in nature. Photo: insects-invertebrates.weebly.com.
