How to sustainably reduce poverty for Lang Son farmers

TPO - Lang Son is a mountainous, border province with a population of over 812 thousand people, ethnic minorities account for 83.91% of the province's population, most of whom are farmers, and their lives are still difficult. Therefore, agricultural extension work has received attention from all levels and sectors in Lang Son, helping people escape poverty.

In recent years, agricultural extension has played a particularly important role in agriculture and rural areas of Lang Son. The mountainous rural areas of Lang Son have a low starting point, so the production level still has many limitations, while with uneven intellectual levels, farmers have a common mentality of being afraid to change their habits to approach new production techniques, new varieties and new methods. Therefore, many good and creative ways of working of professional staff of the Agriculture & Environment (A&E) sector of Lang Son help people to absorb quickly, easily understand, apply immediately and effectively.

On June 5, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center (under the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lang Son) coordinated with the Agricultural Service Center of Cao Loc district to organize the communication program "Agricultural extension market" at Gia Cat commune market, Cao Loc district.

The program attracted nearly 250 farmers to participate in consulting and technical guidance activities in a direct, interactive, visual form that was easy to understand, easy to remember, and easy to follow.

Here, people were directly instructed by officers of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center and the District Agricultural Service Center on the techniques of composting manure and agricultural by-products with Trichodema biological products; techniques of diagnosing diseases by external clinical examination, dissecting chickens to accurately determine the disease from the internal organs inside the chicken's body; and instructions on how to distinguish poor quality inorganic fertilizers circulating on the market.

Lang Son farmers are also consulted on issues arising in production practices; introduced and provided with veterinary medicines, pesticides, corn and rice varieties, and agricultural materials; and watched videos introducing the results of applying technical advances in agricultural production. In addition, farmers are given leaflets and instructions on techniques for creating biological bedding in livestock and poultry farming, techniques for composting organic and microbial fertilizers from agricultural by-products, etc.

Lang Son regularly organizes communication programs "Agricultural extension fairs" to help people understand and apply science and technology in agricultural production and cultivation.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Ha, an officer of the Agricultural Extension Center of Lang Son province, said: In June 2025, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center will implement 4 communication programs "Agricultural Extension Market" in Bac Son, Cao Loc, and Huu Lung districts.

Through the program "Agricultural Promotion Market", not only does it help people gain more knowledge in developing crops and livestock, but it also helps the relevant agencies understand the thoughts and needs of the people to build effective communication programs that are close to the reality of each locality. From these activities, many farming households in Lang Son have boldly invested in livestock barns and developed fruit gardens that bring high economic value. Many households have gradually overcome poverty and stabilized their lives.
