Sanctions open up growth opportunities for Huawei

Speaking at the opening ceremony of Huawei's three-day developer conference in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan, Yu said the company has made breakthroughs in areas ranging from operating systems to artificial intelligence (AI). What's great is that the company's Harmony OS is now available on more than 900 million devices.

“Harmony has made major breakthroughs,” said Yu. “In 10 years, we have achieved what our European and American counterparts took more than 30 years to achieve, which is to build the core technology of an independent operating system.”

HarmonyOS is Huawei's proprietary operating system, launched in 2019 when US technology restrictions cut off Google's support for the Android operating system used by Huawei on its smartphones. According to Yu, the company's Ascend artificial intelligence infrastructure is now the second most popular, behind only Nvidia, which dominates the AI chip market.

According to Mr. Yu, operating systems and other software have been dominated by Europe and the US for a long time, but the era of the internet of things (IoT) has given Huawei the opportunity to surpass them.

Huawei's smartphone business has been experiencing a renaissance since the launch of the Mate60 series last year with the company's improved Kirin 9000S chip, which helped sales of HarmonyOS-powered smartphones surge 68% in the first five months of the year.

Research firm Counterpoint said that in the first quarter of 2024, HarmonyOS surpassed iOS to become the second best-selling mobile operating system in China with a market share of 17%, just behind Android.
