Treating Covid-19 infected people at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases
"This is a positive signal, showing that the city is gradually and effectively controlling the new wave of the epidemic after a period of increase from mid-April to late May," said Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health , on June 17.
The infectious disease surveillance system recorded 69 Covid-19 cases in the city in week 23, and 32 cases in week 24 (from June 9 to 15). Previously, in week 22, the city had the highest number of cases with 94 cases.
According to Dr. Chau, the number of Covid cases is decreasing, but the health sector must not be complacent or negligent in epidemic prevention because the risk of serious complications and death is always possible, especially in people in high-risk groups. Recently, the city recorded two deaths related to Covid-19, in patients with many chronic underlying diseases.
Meanwhile, last week, Hanoi recorded 148 new Covid-19 cases. Thus, over the past month, the number of Covid-19 cases detected each week in the city has remained high at around 150 cases per week.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recommends that people comply with the Ministry of Health's recommendations on disease prevention and control, especially in the context that the NB.1.8.1 variant is still circulating and there is not much scientific data on its virulence and spread rate. Wear a mask in public places, on public transport, and at medical facilities. Wash your hands regularly with clean water, soap, or quick-acting disinfectant.
Avoid crowded places if not necessary. Increase physical activity, training, and proper nutrition. Monitor your health and go to a medical facility immediately if you have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
Medical units have increased monitoring, early detection of cases and new variants, and response to possible situations. The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control is working closely with hospitals and the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) to continue conducting gene sequencing of new cases to assess the spread trend of the NB.1.8.1 variant circulating in the city as well as the possibility of other variants appearing in the future.
Since Covid-19 appeared in the world in 2019, experts believe that the virus causing this disease has continuously changed with thousands of variants through each stage. The newer variants have the characteristics of spreading more strongly, but the level of toxicity is said to be less than the early stage of Covid-19, while the disease has now become annual, with treatment regimens and drugs, and vaccines for vaccination to prevent it.
