Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality rice…

Recently, at Trung An High-Tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company (Trung An Company - Can Tho City), the Vietnam Rice Industry Association (VIETRISA) in collaboration with Trung An Company organized the Ceremony to export the first batch of "Low-emission green Vietnamese rice" to Japan. This is an event marking the rice products from the Project "Sustainable development of one million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta region by 2030" (1 million hectare Project) with the brand name "Low-emission green Vietnamese rice" to the export market.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MARD), the 1 million hectare project is divided into 2 implementation phases. Phase 1 (2024-2025) focuses on 200,000 hectares with production infrastructure conditions and the capacity of cooperatives in production and consumption linkage with enterprises, aiming to achieve the criteria of high-quality, low-emission rice; Phase 2 (2026-2030) focuses on investing in completing infrastructure and continuing to improve the capacity of the entire system to expand an additional 800,000 hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice. In the past time, the Ministry has worked with 12 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region to review the implementation of the project to ensure compliance with the planning of localities and the Mekong Delta region; Review the entire current status of production infrastructure in the project area, especially irrigation infrastructure to meet the requirements of proactive irrigation, infrastructure to support transportation, and synchronous mechanization to create favorable conditions for the application of technical processes for high-quality, low-emission rice production. Thereby, 7 pilot models in 5 provinces and cities including Can Tho City, Dong Thap Province, Kien Giang, Tra Vinh, and Soc Trang were implemented. Typically, in the summer-autumn crop of 2024, the above pilot models had positive results, specifically reducing production costs by 20-30%; increasing productivity by 10%; increasing farmers' income by 20-25%, reducing an average of 5-6 tons of CO2 equivalent per hectare and all harvested rice output was registered by enterprises to be purchased at a purchase price 200-300 VND/kg higher than the market price. The results achieved have created great encouragement for farmers and cooperatives to trust and continue to actively participate in the project.

Mr. Bui Ba Bong, Chairman of VIETRISA, said that the goal of the 1 million hectare project is to produce high-quality rice, reduce emissions with rice certified as green rice, low emissions to domestic consumers as well as to markets around the world , including the most demanding markets. This is a very long road, ensuring food safety, creating high income for farmers, ensuring the ecological environment and contributing to efforts to reduce emissions, reduce the impact of climate change...

According to Mr. Cao Duc Phat, Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment - NN&MT), Former President of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice project in the Mekong Delta is a breakthrough project, creating a premise for the success of Vietnamese agriculture. The project has oriented production towards a sustainable farming model, adapting to climate change and aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As soon as it was deployed in pilot models and entered the replication phase, people were confident and excited to see practical effects such as reduced costs, increased income, and at the same time contributing to environmental protection...

Trung An Company is the first Vietnamese enterprise to export a batch of low-emission rice to the Japanese market from this project. Mr. Pham Thai Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Trung An Company, said: "To implement the 1 million hectare project, the enterprise has linked up with cooperatives, cooperative groups, and people to build raw material areas from planting to harvesting, preserving, and processing for export. This is a key factor to ensure a complete production chain. Along with that, each country has its own regulations on food quality and safety, we also need to comply with the standards in production...".

Low emission rice for export

According to VIETRISA, the "Low-emission Green Vietnamese Rice" label is granted by VIETRISA to rice products produced according to the technical process of the 1 million hectare Project certified by the local government, the agricultural sector, and specialized international organizations, ensuring the origin (place of rice production, rice variety name, crop season) and compliance with the technical process of producing high-quality, low-emission rice of the project. After issuing the regulations on the use of the label, VIETRISA, in coordination with the Rice Value Chain Transformation Project - TRVC, granted the Certificate of Right to Use the "Low-emission Green Vietnamese Rice" label to 7 enterprises, with a total volume of 19,200 tons of rice, Trung An Company is one of these enterprises. Notably, in early June, Trung An Company was the first enterprise to export a batch of goods labeled "Low-emission Green Vietnamese Rice" to the Japanese market, with an output of 500 tons. This event marks an important turning point for the rice industry in sustainable farming, adapting to world consumption trends.

Producing low-emission rice requires great efforts from people, cooperatives, businesses and the agricultural sector of localities in implementing the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta. "Low-emission green Vietnamese rice" not only affirms the brand and quality of the Vietnamese rice industry in the world market but also aims for sustainability, prosperity and demonstrates Vietnam's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the international community. Mr. Cao Duc Phat said that obtaining the "Low-emission green Vietnamese rice" label is an arduous process, with the efforts of many units, including close coordination between ministries, branches, localities and scientists, international organizations, businesses and farmers in implementing the Project of 1 million hectares of rice. The project not only increases income but also contributes to environmental protection, affirming that Vietnamese agriculture is increasingly expanding, becoming a modern and sustainable agriculture. From this success, the Vietnamese agricultural sector will continue to expand the scale of green rice production, not only serving the Japanese market but also other demanding markets around the world.

At the ceremony to export the first batch of "Low-emission Vietnamese Green Rice" to Japan by Trung An Company, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam said that Vietnamese rice exported to the Japanese market not only ensures high quality but also meets low-emission standards, meeting the needs of Japanese consumers. This has proven that the 1 million hectare project has brought about efficiency and transformed the agricultural production mindset of the people from focusing on output to quality and added value, opening up a new direction for the industry, meeting quality standards and sustainable development for the rice industry. "Vietnamese rice not only enters the world market with quality but also ensures international standards of green and sustainable, emission reduction. This is a milestone to mark a shift in the direction of the Vietnamese rice industry when entering the world market, not only focusing on output and quality but also ensuring environmental requirements and achieving emission reduction credits according to the world trend that is being set for the whole world" - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam emphasized.
