(CLO) On January 17, the Brazilian Government announced that Nigeria officially became a partner country in the BRICS bloc.
As the 2025 rotating chair of BRICS, Brazil appreciates Nigeria's contribution to promoting cooperation and global governance reform, in line with the bloc's strategic priorities.
Nigeria, the world’s sixth most populous country with over 228 million people and Africa’s fourth largest economy, shares many common interests with BRICS members. Brazil’s Foreign Ministry praised Nigeria’s important role in strengthening regional ties and promoting the goal of global multipolarity.

The new “partner country” status was approved at the BRICS summit in October 2024 in Kazan, Russia, to accommodate the need to expand cooperation after more than 30 countries applied to join. Nigeria is the ninth official BRICS partner, along with Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
BRICS, founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, and later joined by South Africa in 2011, has expanded its influence with key initiatives such as de-dollarization and international governance reform.
In 2024, the bloc will also welcome new members such as Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, will become a member in early 2025.
The continued expansion of BRICS, including the establishment of partnership status, is a strategic step towards strengthening the alliance's role in the global economic and political system.
