Throughout its history, BMW Motorrad models have inherited the legacy of the legendary BMW R 32. The letter “R” has become a symbol associated with top-of-the-line machines, especially the GS off-road motorcycle line. In 1980, BMW Motorrad made a turning point with the R 80 G/S, a revolutionary off-road boxer. The name “G/S” stands for “Gelände/Straße - off-road/street” in German, marking the large-size enduro and touring enduro segments.
BMW R 1300 GS and BMW R 1300 GSA: a completely different “GS” generation
In 1988, BMW Motorrad launched the R 65 G/S, a 20 kW (27 hp) version of the original G/S with optimised running costs, and the R 100 GS with even more performance and torque. The R 100 GS had a 44 kW (60 hp) engine delivering outstanding power, and was equipped for the first time with the Paralever swingarm. The double-joint structure and the Paralever traction control system provided improved stability and traction on all terrains.
Over the past 45 years, the GS series has created a resounding success for BMW Motorrad, with the R 1150 GS, R 1200 GS, R 1250 GSA versions, bringing special emotions to adventure-loving bikers. The latest generation, called the BMW R 1300 GS and BMW R 1300 GSA, continues to write a new chapter, bringing a completely different driving experience with a powerful engine and advanced technology.
Mr. Christof Lischka - Director of Global Development BMW Motorrad shared: “The new generation BMW R 1300 GS and BMW R 1300 GSA are not only different in appearance, the large GS model has taken the riding experience to a new level, combining comfort, ergonomic design, protection in all harsh weather conditions with the precise handling of the suspension and engine. In particular, the new generation BMW R 1300 GSA is shaped to become the gold standard for the large-size Adventure motorcycle segment” .
Modern technology, enhancing driving experience
The BMW Motorrad R 1300 GS and R 1300 GSA have been completely redesigned, making them 12 kg lighter than their predecessors, weighing 237 kg and 269 kg respectively. The “heart” of the bike is the legendary two-cylinder boxer engine, which has been compactly refined thanks to the placement of the gearbox under the engine, and a completely new camshaft drive mechanism. With a displacement of 1,300 cc, the engine delivers 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm, making it the most powerful boxer engine in the history of BMW Motorrad.
At the heart of the new suspension system is a steel main frame, which optimises the mounting space and offers exceptional rigidity. At the rear, the traditional tubular steel frame has been replaced by a lighter and more rigid cast aluminium frame. The suspension has been upgraded with EVO Telelever at the front, incorporating new spring elements, and EVO Paralever at the rear, upgraded from the R 1250 GS, for precise and stable handling even at high speeds.
On the new R 1300 GS, the adaptive height control system allows automatic adjustment according to the operating conditions, ensuring the rider is always comfortable without losing the feeling of the steering or the steering angle. When stopping or moving at low speed, the vehicle height is automatically lowered by 30 mm.
The new Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) technology on the two models has been upgraded with the ability to fine-tune the front and rear shock absorbers, adjusting the spring stiffness according to the driving mode, operating conditions and driver operations. In particular, the automatic load compensation function helps the vehicle always maintain optimal balance. Thanks to that, the driver can enjoy an exciting journey on all types of terrain, from highways, urban to off-road. DSA always ensures safety, performance and maximum comfort for the driver whether traveling alone, carrying more people or carrying luggage.
Both models are equipped as standard with compact full-LED headlights with a unique light symbol. The Headlight Pro cluster consists of a separate LED strip of 47 bulbs for low and high beams, combined with four LED clusters for daytime running lights. The vehicle integrates the Adaptive Headlight feature, which helps to widen the lighting angle when cornering. The R 1300 GSA also adds two ultra-slim LED auxiliary lights attached to the bodywork, helping to increase safety for the driver.
The driver can choose from 07 custom driving modes according to personal preferences: Eco, Rain, Road, Enduro (standard) and three advanced driving modes Dynamic, Dynamic Pro, Enduro Pro. In which, Rain and Road modes allow adjusting the driving characteristics to suit most road conditions. Eco driving mode (economical) optimizes the driving distance when fuel is full. The additional Enduro driving mode (terrain) allows an advanced driving experience on off-road routes with separate settings for rough terrain.
The new Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) system offers a convenient solution that makes riding a motorcycle easier and more comfortable. With the philosophy of "Simplify your journey", ASA automates clutch and gear shifting operations, enhancing the riding experience while maintaining the dynamism and emotion of each gear change.
