Technological innovation towards “service” is not an option, but a strategic direction for training institutions, especially universities that meet international standards. British University Vietnam (BUV) aims to train more than 10,000 Vietnamese and international students in the next 5 years, while simultaneously implementing cross-border online learning.
"Comprehensive digital transformation in all aspects of operations will establish a solid and powerful launching pad for these important projects," said Professor Rick Bennett, Vice President and Vice President of BUV.
The roadmap was built by BUV based on the proven international standards of JISC - the leading organization on information technology and digital transformation in higher education in the UK. BUV inherits the Overall Theoretical Framework developed by JISC, combined with the In-depth Model to assess the level of "digital maturity" of universities, helping BUV to identify key areas and resources needed to prepare for successful digital transformation.
Covering the entire student journey at BUV is the Student Information Management System - SITS. SITS follows students from the time they are potential candidates until graduation. This is one of the most popular standard applications in higher education administration in the UK and around the world .
All student information is managed on a single system using cloud technology. Thanks to that, BUV eliminates information fragmentation, minimizes errors and saves time for both students and staff. Also on this system, BUV applies Big Data analysis technology to proactively analyze learning outcomes, learning styles, strengths and weaknesses of each student to propose learning paths, support methods and necessary resources.
Thanks to centralized end-to-end information, BUV can design a “tailored” learning path and experience for each student. For example, an early warning system will be activated based on learning outcomes, thereby proposing supplementary programs, tutoring, and re-orientation counseling for at-risk students. At the same time, students with good achievements are also promptly honored and given priority to participate in domestic and international projects to promote their capacity.
BUV's AI chatbot instantly handles an average of 5,000 student questions per month 24/7, increasing the number of student questions answered by 60%, significantly improving satisfaction and convenience.
Along with the AI chatbot, BUV also unifies all campus life data in the BUV Campus Central app. Students can "go to school" from anywhere with internet access to access documents, watch lectures, check their learning progress and receive feedback from lecturers. The app also allows students to track and register for events, clubs, extracurricular activities, and track BUV's exclusive Personal Development Scorecard.
Regarding learning materials, BUV is one of the first organizations in Vietnam to apply the modern digital library management system WorldShare e-Services to access 6 prestigious databases (EBSCO, ProQuest, Emerald, Euromonitor, PressReader...), providing hundreds of thousands of research articles, digitized books, newspapers and specialized case studies completely free of charge for students.
Along with that is a series of online learning tools that create a QS-standard "cloud learning" experience such as: LMS learning management system that allows lecturers to upload documents, assign assignments, grade and communicate with students; Cloud collaboration tools such as One Drive, Microsoft Teams allow students to work in groups, share documents and interact in real time.
Many training programs at BUV integrate world-leading training software, such as Codio in computer science training. Codio provides a cloud-based programming learning environment, supports learning with AI, automatic grading and plagiarism detection, helping students experience the reality of programming while still ensuring academic standards through intelligent source code analysis.
AI platforms like Imagine Explainer help visualize abstract concepts, helping students absorb complex knowledge more effectively. Or game development platform GDevelop helps connect theory and practice through real-world projects , developing problem-solving thinking and programming skills.
In addition to inheriting and applying existing digital transformation achievements, BUV proactively develops many new initiatives.
The EduGrade AI application supports score moderation and increases consistency in grading standards among instructors, enhancing fairness and transparency in the academic assessment process.
The AI Assessment Framework (AIAS) - a five-level model that guides students in the ethical use of AI in academia - has been adopted by more than 300 institutions globally, and won the 2024 Tracey Bretag Prize for Academic Ethics.
The spirit of "lifelong learning" is spread by BUV to the operating staff through the AI Skills Enhancement training program. BUV leads the digital transformation capacity building project called "SOARing to Successful Digital Transformation in Vietnamese Universities", in cooperation with Bournemouth University (UK) and major universities in Vietnam.
According to Vice President Rick Bennett, BUV does not see digital transformation as a destination. It is a continuous, ongoing process, reimagining the core functions and culture of the entire university, rather than stopping at single digital platforms.
"It is undeniable that digital transformation is a process that requires a lot of financial resources. But more importantly, BUV's initial success comes from cultural readiness, team determination, and strategic targeting," affirmed Mr. Rick Bennett.
Assoc. Prof. Mike Perkins - Head of the Center for Research and Development - leads the forum on digital transformation
In the future, BUV is actively testing new generation GenAI assistants to further enhance the student experience for all aspects of school life. The BUV AI Application Center will soon be launched, playing a role in researching and spreading practical impacts from AI applications beyond the campus to the community and economy.
With the vision of positioning itself as the leading international university in the country and region, BUV continues to develop further in training projects, technology transfer to educational institutions and state management agencies, making practical contributions to the general transformation process of the entire education sector and society.
