Before the match, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team were rated much lower than their opponents, the Polish women's volleyball team (ranked 3rd in the world). However, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team (ranked 22nd in the world) created a big surprise in the opening set when they won 25-23.
In this match, the opponent was superior in terms of physique and class, but the Vietnamese girls still played proactively, with a variety of moves, flexible defense, and took the lead in the final series of points. The Vietnamese team surprised the Polish players with their subjectivity. This was the first historic set in the world arena for the Vietnamese women's volleyball team.
After losing in set 1, the superior class helped the Polish women's team regain control of the game and win the next 3 sets to end the match with a score of 3 - 1. With tall attackers and excellent blocking ability, the European team completely dominated the following sets.
In set 4, the Vietnamese girls unexpectedly led 6-1, 7-3, forcing their opponents to think. After returning, Poland quickly demonstrated their true class to score a series of points to tie the score at 8-8, then lead 16-12 and then 21-17. Despite their efforts, Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's students could only raise their score to 22, before letting their opponents secure a 25-22 victory in this decisive set.
Losing to Poland, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team was deducted points, but very little. Specifically, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's team was only deducted 0.01 points and still maintained its world ranking of 22nd.
Despite the defeat in the opening match, the performance showed positive signs of Vietnamese women's volleyball in their first participation in a world-class tournament. The fiery fighting spirit and resilience of the Vietnamese girls made fans admire them, and at the same time opened up new confidence for the next stage of the tournament.
Vietnamese volleyball fans expect coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team to continue to keep the fire burning in the next matches with opponents in Group G: German women's volleyball team (at 5:00 p.m. on August 25) and Kenya women's volleyball team (at 5:00 p.m. on August 27).
Difficulties are predicted to come to the Vietnamese team when facing the world's 11th ranked team, Germany (Germany just beat Kenya 3-0 in the first match of Group G).
In fact, the Vietnamese women's team will compete in the FIVB Challenge Cup in 2023 and 2024 against strong European teams. However, the level of expertise and severity of the above tournament cannot be compared to the FIVB World Championships.
The opponents at the 2025 World Championship are mostly very strong, so the Vietnamese women's volleyball team has set the goal of learning, accumulating experience and improving their level through each match. The goal of this tour is to help the team have the best preparation for the 33rd SEA Games campaign later this year.
