19-8 Hospital performed arthroscopic surgery to repair torn triangular fibrocartilage disc of the wrist with special self-made instruments

Using the “joint stretching frame” researched and manufactured by the unit to replace the specialized “robotic arm” for arthroscopic surgery to treat triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries of the wrist, doctors of the Orthopedic Trauma Department, Hospital 19-8 successfully performed surgery on a male police patient. This is a difficult trauma surgery, marking a new step forward in the successful treatment of this complex group of diseases.

Male patient Nguyen Manh Hung said that he often plays sports and goes to the gym. During a boxing match, he suddenly had a severe pain in his wrist on the side of the little finger, and it was very painful when he rotated his wrist and held objects. Mr. Hung had to be treated at a hospital in Hanoi with anti-inflammatory painkillers and a splint for more than a month, but his condition did not improve. After being discharged from the hospital, Mr. Hung still could not carry heavy objects, had sharp pain when rotating his wrist, and could not go to the gym again like before.

Doctors from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at 19-8 Hospital performed arthroscopic surgery on the wrist to suture the triangular fibrocartilage disc of the wrist with the support of a self-made device called a "joint stretching frame".

The illness lasted for many months, Mr. Hung continued to go to another hospital for examination and treatment and was told to continue taking medication and wearing a splint, however, as soon as the medication ran out, the pain in his wrist returned. After several months of treatment with medication and wearing a splint to fix the wrist injury according to the traditional treatment method as above, Mr. Hung still did not recover, so he went to the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery and Sports Medicine (abbreviated as the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics) of Hospital 19-8 for examination and treatment.

Through initial examination, doctors diagnosed Mr. Hung with a damage to the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) of the wrist and ordered a high-quality MRI scan with sharp resolution from a 3.0 tesla MRI machine. This is a modern MRI machine invested in by the Ministry of Public Security and not many hospitals in Vietnam are equipped with. From the scan results, doctors from the Orthopedic Trauma Department, Hospital 19-8 decided to perform wrist surgery to completely treat this complex injury.

To proactively treat patients, doctors from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at 19-8 Hospital have successfully researched and manufactured a “hand joint traction frame” to replace the “robotic arm”. This joint traction frame is not only used in arthroscopic surgery of the wrist, but is also applied by 19-8 Hospital to treat other locations, such as arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, etc.

This initiative has helped 19-8 Hospital save on investment costs for purchasing specialized equipment such as "robotic arms", helping doctors to be completely autonomous in the time of performing surgery, while helping patients save on costs for surgical equipment.
