  • Unhealthy diet: consuming a lot of sugar, refined starches, fast food, and carbonated soft drinks.
  • Sedentary lifestyle: A sedentary lifestyle, sitting a lot, and not exercising reduces the body's ability to use insulin.
  • Overweight - obesity, especially abdominal obesity: this is the main risk factor for insulin resistance.
  • Genetic factors - family: if parents have diabetes, children are at higher risk.
  • Stress and sleep disorders may also contribute to early onset of the disease.

In fact, at clinic 315, we have recorded many patients under 40 years old, even 25-30 years old, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, mainly due to modern sedentary lifestyle and uncontrolled eating habits.

What blood sugar level is considered diabetic?

Doctor Vinh Thai said that high blood sugar does not necessarily mean diabetes, but it is an important warning sign.

According to the guidelines of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health and ADA (American Diabetes Association): If fasting blood sugar ≥ 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L), or 2-hour postprandial blood sugar ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L), or HbA1c ≥ 6.5%, diabetes can be diagnosed.

However, to be sure, the patient should be examined and have additional standardized tests done.

How to prevent diabetes?

You can completely prevent or slow the progression of diabetes with the following measures:

  • Maintain ideal weight, avoid belly fat.
  • Eat healthy: reduce sugar, limit refined starch, increase green vegetables, lean protein, fiber.
  • Regular exercise: at least 150 minutes per week, suitable for health.
  • Reduce stress, get enough sleep.
  • Regular health check-ups, especially if there are risk factors such as: family history of diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, etc.

According to Dr. Thai, when we suspect we have diabetes, we can go to People's Hospital 115, Gia Dinh Hospital, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, 315 Health System... for examination.
