Storm No. 5 kills 3 people, injures 13, damages more than 10,000 houses

According to a quick report from localities, by the morning of August 26, storms and heavy rains had killed 3 people (in Ninh Binh, Nghe An and Ha Tinh ), and injured 13 people in the provinces of Phu Tho, Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Tri.

A house in Ly Thuong Kiet ward ( Ninh Binh province) had its wall blown down by a tornado on the night of August 25.

The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention said a series of houses were severely damaged with 8 houses collapsed, more than 6,800 houses had their roofs blown off and more than 3,000 houses were flooded.

In Thanh Hoa, heavy rains caused flooding, isolating 27 villages in 3 communes of Xuan Chinh, Van Xuan and Tan Thanh. The dyke system was also affected: a 25m landslide on the right bank of Chu River (Thanh Hoa) and a blocked culvert at Hoi Thong sea dyke (Ha Tinh). At the same time, coastal landslide in Dan Hai commune (Ha Tinh) lasted about 200m.

At least 31,000 hectares of rice, 2,700 hectares of crops and 2,200 hectares of fruit trees have been flooded, nearly 20,000 trees have been broken and felled; about 160 hectares of aquatic products have been flooded and overflowed.

The traffic system is paralyzed in many places: 4 flooded points in Nghe An, 1 point in Ha Tinh, 6 landslides on rural roads and many underground roads are overflowing.

Aviation operations had to be adjusted as 30 flights had to be diverted and 35 others were cancelled due to the temporary suspension of operations at Dong Hoi and Tho Xuan airports.

Regarding electricity, more than 1.6 million customers have lost power, with the most severe being in the provinces of Nghe An, Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh. Electricity units have checked and found 750 broken electric poles. Local authorities are focusing on fixing the initial problem, calculating additional damage and implementing further response measures.
