According to The Verge , Apple has acquired Mira, an augmented reality wearable startup, for an undisclosed amount. Mira was founded in 2016 by entrepreneur Ben Taft, and is based in Los Angeles (USA).

The startup makes AR headsets for major clients, including Universal Studios for its Nintendo World theme park attractions. Venture funds including Blue Bear Capital, Happiness Ventures, and Sequoia have poured $17 million into the company, with big hopes for its software and head-up displays to create AR apps, games, and experiences.

Mira startup acquisition draws attention after Apple unveils Vision Pro

Mira initially pitched its hardware as a soft introduction to the world of AR, with an emphasis on consumer applications. But the company later pivoted to industrial deployments, finding that the market was more profitable.

The Verge reports that Mira has secured a number of military contracts, including deals with the US Air Force and Navy. It is unclear whether those contracts are owned by Apple.

News of the acquisition comes after Apple unveiled its Vision Pro headset at WWDC 2023. Apple’s new spatial computer has been rumored for some time and is the company’s first official foray into AR. It’s unclear how much of a role Mira will play in the company’s AR roadmap, but it’s worth noting that Apple design legend Jony Ive has been an advisor to Mira.
