Despite winning an Oscar for her supporting role in the musical adaptation of Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway was still quite surprised by her character in the film Mother Mary directed by David Lowery.

The indie film centers on Hathaway's pop star, who performs modern pop songs written by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff. Although Hathaway recorded the main songs, the score was not completed during filming, so she had to improvise much of it during filming.

Sharing with Vogue magazine, she said: "It was like learning from scratch, because if I had the background music, I would have known it by heart. But things didn't go that way. But in the end, I was happy because I had control of this role."

The Odyssey actress revealed that for this role: "I had to accept that I was a beginner. That humble background made me obsessed with 'I'm terrible'. So I had to constantly comfort myself that everything would be okay, that I was not bad."

Hathaway's character has been described as "a cross between Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift". Actor Michaela Coel, who plays a fashion designer in the film, will have scenes visiting techno clubs with Hathaway's character saying, "it was a very brave thing for Hathaway to do in this film".

Writer/director Lowery even recounted how intense the production process was. While filming a pivotal scene at the end of the film, Hathaway was completely immersed in the moment. "It was like filming Apocalypse Now ," Lowery added.

The filmmaker previously told the Melbourne International Film Festival that Mother Mary is a "strange film" partly inspired by Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula .

He elaborated: "I was in the process of editing the film and I kept asking myself, 'What is this film?' I knew what I was going to do and that's really what I did, but it was so wild. I was sure it was a film that would evoke a lot of strong emotions, in every way possible. It was very true, very close to who I am, but it also kept surprising me in ways I didn't expect."
