47,000 people in Norway 'missed' lottery win ---- CMS Test

The incident occurred after the Eurojackpot draw on June 27, when the Norsk Tipping system incorrectly posted the winning amount, causing the lifeless numbers to suddenly become assets worth hundreds of thousands of kroner. The cause was determined to be that the technical staff multiplied by 100 instead of dividing by 100 when converting the units from euro cents to Norwegian kroner.

Ole Fredrik Sveen, one of the aforementioned winners, recalled the moment when he thought his life had turned a new page: “I thought: ‘Oh my God, is it finally my turn? Is this real?’. I went to the Norsk Tipping website and it was clearly: ‘Congratulations, you’ve won!’”. The prize value for Mr. Sveen was displayed on the Norsk Tipping website as 1.2 million kroner (about 119,000 USD), however, in reality, it was only 125 kroner (about 12 USD).

The next day, Mr. Sveen and about 47,000 others received an apology message from Norsk Tipping. But for many, the apology was not enough.

The incident quickly became a hot topic in Norway, not only because of player frustration but also because it is a state-owned enterprise, which is required to have a high level of responsibility in ensuring transparency and accuracy.

Norwegian Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery called the error “completely unacceptable.” The National Lottery Supervisory Authority has also opened an investigation into whether Norsk Tipping broke the law.

The pressure mounted, forcing Norsk Tipping CEO Tonje Sagstuen to resign on June 28, just one day after the incident was exposed. Acting CEO Vegar Strand publicly apologized on June 30: “We have deeply disappointed our customers and take full responsibility for fixing the consequences. Errors like this are serious for a company built on the trust of people.”

Mr Strand also admitted that Norsk Tipping's state-owned status made the case more serious and that the company's survival "depends on public trust", adding that "restoring trust will be the number one priority" for Norsk Tipping.
