Research published in the medical journal BMJ Medicine suggests you could be avoiding two major health problems with just your morning cup of coffee.

A research team from Karolinska School of Medicine (Sweden) in collaboration with the University of Bristol and Imperial College London (UK) used data from nearly 10,000 people collected from existing genetic databases, focusing on variants associated with the rate of caffeine breakdown.

Researchers wanted to determine the link between blood caffeine levels and obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to Science Alert.

You can avoid 2 major health problems with just one cup of coffee every morning.

Results found that higher blood caffeine concentrations were associated with lower body mass index (BMI) and total body fat mass.

Furthermore, higher blood caffeine levels are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

The authors estimated that about half of caffeine's diabetes risk-reducing effect was due to reduction in BMI.

Thus, drinking unsweetened coffee may be a potential measure to help reduce body fat levels and prevent diabetes.

Previous studies have shown that moderate caffeine consumption is linked to better heart health and lower BMI, and this study adds further insight into the effects of coffee on the body.

Drinking unsweetened coffee may be a potential way to help prevent diabetes

Small, short-term trials have shown that caffeine intake leads to weight loss and fat mass loss, but the long-term effects of caffeine intake are unknown. Therefore, given the widespread consumption of coffee worldwide , even small metabolic effects of caffeine could have important health implications, the researchers explain.

The researchers explain that the reason caffeine does this amazing thing is because it increases thermogenesis (heat production) and fat oxidation (converting fat into energy) in the body, both of which play important roles in overall metabolism.

The authors concluded that higher blood levels of caffeine may reduce obesity and the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, more research is needed to confirm the results, according to Science Alert.

Experts say drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day can help you live longer, so limit the amount of added sugar, preferably black coffee without sugar.
