Today, on the Duong River, the section flowing through Dai Lai Commune, Bac Ninh Province, there are hundreds, thousands of large-scale fish cages, stretching for kilometers on the river surface. For about 10 years now, realizing the economic efficiency of the fish cage farming model on the Duong River, households have asked the local government for permission to build a farming model on the river.

Mr. Tran Van Vang's family, in Chi Nhi village, Dai Lai commune, said: "Currently, my family has more than 20 cages of crispy carp, which have been raised for 6 months, each fish weighs 3-4kg, and is now at harvest time. Therefore, I have to stay on the raft regularly waiting to sell fish to traders. The consumption of products is now also favorable, if anyone wants to sell, they can just text the traders and they will come to the raft to weigh the fish. People no longer have to struggle to find a place to sell fish."
Cage fish farming has been developing strongly in Dai Lai commune for decades with all kinds of fish from red tilapia, tilapia, black carp and common carp. Each year the scale of cage fish farming area is expanded. The level, skills and experience of cage fish farming of the people are also greatly improved. Each cage fish yields from 4-6 tons, this time of year fish prices are good, so cage fish farmers in Dai Lai commune are very excited.
Mr. Vu Van Chien, a fish cage farmer on the Duong River, said: "Raising fish in cages on the river requires a large investment. My family currently has 37 cages, using a crop rotation model to harvest fish regularly and reduce input costs. From the time the fish are small, we have to spend 8-10 million VND per day on food, which translates to nearly 250-300 million VND per month. When the fish are big, the cost of fish food can be up to 600-650 million VND per month.
Although the cost is quite high, cage fish farming also brings significant income to farmers that many other jobs cannot match.
To facilitate people to develop effective cage fish farming models, every year the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Bac Ninh province actively propagates and guides people to develop specialties suitable to actual conditions; supports access to scientific and technical advances and provides quality breeds; guides disease prevention and control measures; monitors, warns and forecasts water quality so that people can take timely measures.
Up to now, the whole province has 2,793 fish cages and most of the cage locations are on the Duong River, concentrated in the communes of Dai Lai, Cao Duc, Phu Lang, Mao Dien ward... Many types of fish with high quality and economic value are put into intensive farming such as: hybrid carp, monosex tilapia, red tilapia, American catfish, catfish, etc. The average yield per crop is 4-6 tons/cage, much higher than raising fish in earthen ponds.

From the success of the fish cage farming model on the river, the local government of Dai Lai commune has focused on consolidating land from 4 to 5 plots/household down to 2 plots, switching from ineffective rice cultivation to aquaculture and crops with high economic value.
Within just one year, Dai Lai commune has completed land consolidation. Many aquaculture models have emerged in the commune, bringing high economic efficiency with an average value of 1 to 1.5 billion VND/ha/year. Up to now, the commune has more than one hundred livestock and aquaculture farms on the fields, bringing high economic efficiency to local people.
As the economy develops, people also have the conditions to support resources for new rural construction. From 2022 to now, Dai Lai commune has mobilized community resources and thousands of square meters of land to expand village roads. At the same time, renovating and building new cultural houses, solidifying canals, building waste collection and sorting areas, and lighting systems on roads, changing the entire rural appearance of Dai Lai commune. After just over 2 years, Dai Lai commune has completed all the criteria for advanced new rural areas.
