Operating system identifier by year
Apple has officially adopted a new naming scheme for its operating systems, using release years instead of traditional version numbers. The new operating systems, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26, will be released in late 2025.

The Liquid Glass interface is applied across iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and watchOS platforms, bringing transparency and subtle visual effects to buttons, text, and controls.
Core application improvements
The Safari, Camera, and Phone apps have been redesigned for a better user experience. Safari now takes full screen, Camera simplifies photo and video capture options, and the Phone app combines favorites, call history, and voicemail into a single interface.
iPadOS 26 supports multitasking windows
iPad users can now customize the size of app windows, move them around flexibly, open multiple windows at once, and enjoy a more macOS-like experience.
Messages with custom wallpapers and new features
Apple added the ability to change conversation backgrounds, create polls in groups, and provide typing indicators to help users follow messages more quickly.

MacOS Tahoe 26 Spotlight optimization
The next macOS software update will introduce an upgrade to Spotlight that will make your search results more relevant with personalization and filtering options to help you find specific files, folders, apps, and messages. It will also add the ability to perform actions like sending an email or creating a note.
Vision Pro expands gaming support
Apple Vision Pro virtual reality headset will support PSVR2 controller in visionOS 26, expanding the VR game library. In addition, Apple also brings intelligent scrolling and built-in spatial utilities.
Apple Intelligence supports on-screen content search
There’s a new Apple Intelligence feature coming to iOS 26 that lets you use the same buttons you use to take a screenshot to summon the AI assistant. From there, you can ask more questions about what you’re seeing on screen using ChatGPT, or search for a specific item on Google or Etsy to find similar images.

Along with the Liquid Glass design language, Apple will introduce a new “wrist flick” gesture to dismiss notifications in watchOS 26. The Apple Watch will also get a new AI-powered “Workout Buddy,” which will generate personalized advice and encouragement.
Live translation in calls and messages
Live Translation enables instant voice translation in FaceTime, Phone, and Messages, making multilingual communication easier.
AirPods support camera control
Users can take photos by tapping on the AirPods, and Apple is also developing a feature that records “studio-quality” voice in noisy environments.
Apple opens AI to developers
While Apple's keynote didn't feature much AI news, the company did announce that it would give third-party app developers access to the large on-device language model used by Apple Intelligence, allowing them to create their own tools.
