Longan farmers in Xuan Hoa commune have converted to organic production to produce delicious and safe longan. The locality is also implementing many programs to support farmers in building specialized longan growing areas according to the chain, building a brand for the specialty longan fruit of the industrial province.

Specialty plants "take root" in new lands

Longan trees are grown most concentratedly in Xuan Tam 6 hamlet. This area is home to many people from the Western provinces who come here to settle down and live. At first, some households planted a few longan trees in their gardens to have fruit to eat. Seeing that this crop has high productivity, high quality, can be sold at a good price, and the soil is suitable, people began to expand the area of longan cultivation.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lai, a farmer in Xuan Tam 5 Hamlet, is the second generation in her family to grow longan. She said: “My parents have been growing longan since 1998. Currently, in my parents’ garden, there are still longan roots that are more than 20 years old. At first, they mainly grew cowhide longan. About 15 years ago, they switched to yellow rice longan. When I grew up, I followed my parents’ career by investing in a garden to grow yellow rice longan because this specialty tree gives good profits.”

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, a farmer in Xuan Tam 6 hamlet, shared: Longan trees start to bear fruit after about 2 years; after about 4-5 years, they will have high yields. This yellow rice boat longan variety is grown in the Western provinces. Farmers often have to build high mounds (also known as ridges) for the longan roots and make ditches underneath to drain water. In Xuan Hoa, farmers still build mounds for the longan roots, but the height is usually lower than in the low-lying areas of the West. This is an important technique for longan trees to grow well, helping them avoid waterlogging and root rot during the rainy season.

According to longan farmers in Xuan Hoa commune, longan trees grown in this area have good quality with thick skin, the flesh inside is also thicker, crispy, drained with rich sweetness. Growing in this area, longan trees have high productivity because they are less likely to drop fruit. Therefore, longan trees in this area are often sold at higher prices than the general market price thanks to their good quality, thick skin, so they stay fresh and can be preserved longer.

Some skilled longan farmers in Xuan Hoa commune often choose to grow off-season longan for harvest in March and April every year so that the product can be sold at a higher price.

Forming specialized areas

According to longan farmers in Xuan Hoa commune, in the past, this land was often used to grow cajuput trees and other mixed gardens, while the lower land was used to grow rice, so the economic efficiency was often not high. Therefore, when there were some longan gardens in the locality with good harvests and prices, farmers boldly switched to this specialty fruit variety with high economic efficiency.

At first, longan farmers were still small and fragmented. When the area of this crop was expanded, farmers invested in intensive farming and applied science and technology to production. In particular, farmers invested in automated systems for watering and fertilizing. In particular, many households used drones to spray pesticides to treat pests.

Longan harvest season in Xuan Hoa commune usually focuses on the 7th and 8th lunar months every year. Many gardeners often wait for the trees to flower, bear fruit and harvest on the full moon day of the 7th lunar month. This is the time when the market demand for fruit offerings increases; on the other hand, many summer fruits are out of season at this time, so there is no need to worry about the market being flooded with fruit.

Longan farmers in Xuan Hoa commune often let grass grow in their gardens during the fruiting season to create a cooler microclimate, reducing the sunlight reflected from the ground when the longan bears fruit to limit the fruit from rotting and falling. This layer of grass is left to decompose into an organic layer to replenish nutrients for the soil. In recent years, local longan farmers have been switching to organic production to produce delicious, safe longan fruit for the market.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Xung, Vice Chairman of Xuan Hoa Commune People's Committee, thanks to suitable soil conditions and experienced longan farmers, this crop has high yield and good quality. Xuan Hoa longan products are popular in the market. However, what farmers care about most is stable output for the product. Accordingly, the locality has established Dong Tien Fruit Cooperative, linking with farmers to form a production chain; supporting farmers to build and promote the brand for Xuan Hoa longan so that this specialty variety can develop sustainably.
