Low on the mountainside
Pointing to a residential area of 15 households in A Duong residential group (Dong Giang commune), Mr. BNuong Ngang, head of A Duong residential group, said: “This area used to belong to Prao town, and currently has 15 households with special housing difficulties. When there is a warning of landslides, natural disasters, etc., people must quickly evacuate to medical stations and solid places to take shelter.”
According to Mr. Ngang, there are cracks at the top of the mountain behind the houses, and the risk of landslides is very high. Mr. A Lang Lay, a resident of A Duong residential group, added that whenever it rains heavily, his family and the surrounding households are always nervous and worried because rocks and soil can fall down at any time.
According to the reporter's records, the houses of the people here are precariously located high up, leaning against the cliff and are at risk of collapsing if a landslide occurs.

According to Mr. Coor Le, Chairman of Dong Giang Commune People's Committee, besides the above households, Dong Giang commune also has other areas at risk of landslides such as Xa Nghin village in Za Hung commune (old), A Dieu village in Arooi commune (old).
After establishing a two-level government, Dong Giang commune government has had a project to prevent and combat natural disasters and review landslide-prone areas in the area.
When there is a warning of storms, heavy rains, etc., the Commune's Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue Committee (PCTT&TCKN) mobilizes people in areas at high risk of landslides to quickly move to communal houses in villages and safe places to take shelter and absolutely not be subjective. In addition, when there is a warning of a natural disaster, people also proactively stock up on food, provisions, etc.

In Song Kon commune, according to the review of local authorities, mountainous areas in Pho, A Roch, Brua, Ra Dung villages... are also at risk of landslides. According to Mr. Do Huu Tung, Chairman of Song Kon Commune People's Committee, Song Kon commune currently has an area of over 210 km2 , a population of nearly 8,750 people; of which the Co Tu ethnic group accounts for more than 80%.
The people mainly live in semi-sedentary settlements on steep, rugged hills and mountains with crisscrossing rivers and streams in Song Kon, A Ting and Jo Ngay communes of Dong Giang district in the past. Therefore, disaster prevention and control work in the locality is a top priority.
Before the storm, Song Kon commune organized a review to determine the number of people living in areas at risk of landslides. Currently, the authorities have recorded more than 50 households in the area at risk and continue to review surrounding households and houses on cliffs to have a timely evacuation plan.
According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Song Kon Commune, Do Huu Tung, the first thing is to raise people's awareness of disaster prevention and control through propaganda, warnings and mobilizing people to evacuate before natural disasters. The locality will summarize the work of disaster prevention and control from the reality of the communes before the merger to gain experience, perfect the response plan according to the "4 on-site" motto and find solutions for areas at risk of landslides.

“In the near future, we will continue to review areas to serve as shelters for people during natural disasters, especially building community houses. Dong Giang district has previously invested in 10 community houses that also function as safe shelters during natural disasters,” said Mr. Tung.
Need to quickly invest in resettlement land
According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Song Kon Commune, Do Huu Tung, the commune recently worked with the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Da Nang City to inspect the landslide location in Pho village. The locality also submitted a request to the city to support a long-term solution for people in areas at risk of landslides.
Song Kon commune authorities recommend that the city should soon invest in anti-erosion embankments to ensure safety before the upcoming storm season.
Mr. Tung said that the commune strives to have at least one concentrated resettlement area in the coming time and 4-5 resettlement areas in the future.
“The biggest wish of people in landslide-prone areas is for the city government to pay attention and invest in building concentrated resettlement areas. There, people will have a stable and safe place to live so they can confidently develop their economy .
Mr. Do Huu Tung, Chairman of Song Kon Commune People's Committee
Similarly, in Dong Giang commune, Chairman of Dong Giang Commune People's Committee Coor Le said that the goal of focusing on investing in resettlement sites has been and is being implemented by the locality during the 2025-2030 term.
Regarding long-term solutions, Mr. Coor Le said that in addition to prioritizing socio-economic development, Dong Giang commune focuses on investing in resettlement sites. In particular, efforts will be made to develop 1-2 resettlement sites in the old communes.

In the immediate future, Dong Giang commune is making efforts to develop the site and organize the selection of contractors to implement the construction package of the resettlement area in A Bung - Tu Ngung village. The project is expected to be implemented in September 2025. When this project is completed, about 60 households at risk of landslides in A Dieu village will have a stable place to live.
Storm No. 5 is approaching, people here are hoping for a spacious resettlement area to settle down, find work, and ease the anxiety about landslides in particular and natural disasters in general.
