Xavi Simons makes his debut for Tottenham. |
The 22-year-old Dutch midfielder completed a £52m plus add-ons move from RB Leipzig to Spurs, signing a contract until 2030 with the option of a further two years. The move ended months of speculation linking him with a move to Stamford Bridge, which had left many Tottenham fans worried their city rivals would snatch him at the last minute.
Simons, who has a habit of celebrating goals by pretending to answer the phone, said: "Noise? Don't listen to it. The important thing is that Tottenham called and I answered." The "noise" in question was a reference to rumours of Simons moving to Chelsea, which he ignored.
The arrival of the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player also means that Tottenham's search for a new No. 10 has ended, after missing out on Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze earlier in the summer. Simons said he was extremely happy, had dreamed of this moment for a long time and as soon as he met head coach Thomas Frank, he felt this was the right place. Simons promises to bring creativity, but also discipline and a dedication to winning, for the team and for the fans.
Having signed after the 12pm deadline on Friday, Simons will not be available for Saturday's game against Bournemouth, while he is still awaiting a work permit. However, the 28-time Netherlands international will be introduced to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium crowd shortly before kick-off.
