Pepper and spice exports: Improving quality, targeting high-end market segments Pepper prices are forecast to remain high

The Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) cited data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) saying that in 2023, Germany imported 16.52 thousand tons of pepper from non-EU markets, worth nearly 70.4 million EUR (equivalent to 76.57 million USD), down 25.1% in volume and 34% in value compared to 2022.

In 2023, the average import price of pepper from Germany outside the EU market will reach 4,260 USD/ton, down 11.9% compared to 2022. Of which, the average import price of pepper from Germany from all sources outside the bloc will decrease. The lowest decrease is 7.3% from Brazil; the highest decrease is 20.3% from Vietnam.

In 2023, the main sources of pepper from outside the bloc for Germany include: Vietnam, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Of which, Vietnam is the largest source of pepper from outside the bloc for Germany in 2023, with a volume of 8.85 thousand tons, worth nearly 35.12 million EUR (equivalent to 38.2 million USD), down 10.2% in volume and 28.4% in value compared to 2022.

However, Vietnam's pepper market share in Germany's total imports from the non-EU market will still increase from 44.67% in 2022 to 53.56% in 2023. Brazil is the second largest source of non-EU pepper for Germany in 2023, with a volume of 4.61 thousand tons, worth 16.87 million EUR (equivalent to 18.35 million USD), down 45.4% in volume and 49.4% in value compared to 2022.

Brazil's pepper market share in Germany's total imports from the non-EU market decreased from 38.26% in 2022 to 27.92% in 2023. In 2023, Germany also reduced pepper imports from Indonesia and Cambodia, but increased imports from India.
