On August 7, information from Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital ( Hai Phong ) said that the unit had just successfully performed surgery to reattach a severed left forearm for a male patient.
The surgery lasted several hours, with the coordinated participation of many specialized teams: vascular, orthopedic trauma, microsurgery, plastic surgery and neurology.
Previously, at around 6:00 p.m. on August 6, male patient PND (35 years old) with an address in Tan Lap, Duong Kinh, Hai Phong was admitted to the hospital in a complicated condition: wounds on the left arm, left shoulder and left chest wall about 15cm in size, hemorrhagic shock, low blood pressure, had to use high doses of vasopressors to maintain circulation.
Before being hospitalized, the patient's severed limb was temporarily immobilized by family members with rubber bands.
At the Emergency Department, after removing the initial immobilization device, the medical team quickly assessed the patient's injuries, applied a pressure bandage to stop the bleeding, immobilized the severed limb, used pain relievers, prophylactic antibiotics, anti-tetanus, and performed emergency tests.
Initial assessment showed that the patient had multiple injuries, complete rupture of both bones in the left forearm, and vascular injuries (arteries and veins) at two locations. The injuries were life-threatening and the prognosis was poor.
The initial surgery was divided into two teams, one in charge of cleaning the severed limb (left forearm), and one in charge of the receiving end.
Then, the teams in charge performed the surgery in turn: trauma - orthopedic team for bone fixation, vascular microsurgery team, neurosurgery team, tendon and muscle microsurgery team, and plastic microsurgery team. During the surgery, the patient was transfused with 1,500ml of blood.
The surgery lasted 10 hours and the patient's severed left leg was successfully reattached. After the surgery, the patient was awake, breathing on his own, and had stable blood pressure.
According to medical experts, surgery to reattach a severed limb is a highly complex surgical technique, requiring a team of surgeons with deep expertise, especially in orthopedic trauma and microsurgery.
In this case, management and surgery were challenging because the patient was admitted in hemorrhagic shock due to acute blood loss at the scene.
Surgery must be performed within strict time limits to ensure the viability of the limb and the patient's life, while simultaneously addressing complex injuries to the bones, blood vessels, nerves and soft tissue.
The surgery was rated as having a difficulty level of about 7/10, with high requirements for technique, speed and smooth coordination between many specialized teams.
Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital has long been a trusted address in handling severe trauma, multiple trauma and complex microsurgery cases.
This surgery to reattach the patient's forearm continues to affirm the solid professional capacity and dedication of the medical team.
Previously, on May 20, the hospital also successfully performed surgery to reattach half of a hand to a 41-year-old female patient./.
