Japan hopes East Asia and Southeast Asia can jointly host a World Cup. |
Asean Football revealed that Japan is believed to be the country leading this initiative. According to multiple sources, the cooperation plan was agreed upon during a meeting between EAFF and AFF held in Tokyo last March.
Here, Japan Football Association (JFA) President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto confirmed that no official documents have been exchanged, but things are initially very positive. "We have not exchanged official documents, but there are conversations about how great cooperation would be," Mr. Miyamoto shared.
The proposal fits in with the growing trend of co-hosting World Cups. The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, while the 2030 World Cup is expected to span six countries on three continents.
With Southeast Asia's rapid economic development, coupled with modern football infrastructure and extensive hosting experience from Japan and South Korea, the two regions have emerged as strong candidates for the 2046 World Cup.
If successful, this will be the first time Japan has hosted the World Cup in 44 years, since the legendary 2002 tournament with South Korea. "The prospect of EAFF and AFF joining hands to organize the 2046 World Cup is very bright," Asean Football concluded.
