
Since the beginning of the rainy season, the Gia Nghia urban bypass has seen some damaged and degraded sections. Of these, the first section of the route, in Bac Gia Nghia ward, is the most severely degraded. Along a length of about 200 m, the road surface is peeling and cracking like “broken rice paper”, with many holes 20-30 cm deep and several meters in diameter. The degraded section of the road has a steep slope, making it quite dangerous for people and vehicles.
Mr. Nguyen The Huu - a container driver on the Dak Lak - Ho Chi Minh City route who often travels through the Gia Nghia bypass said: The truck he drives is heavy, so when going uphill and encountering a deep hole, he has to stop suddenly to change gear. At some severely damaged sections, he even has to drive into the opposite lane to avoid the hole. There have been many times when there have been local traffic jams, with trucks and cars crowding on the narrow road, posing a danger to motorcyclists.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan, in Bac Gia Nghia ward, traffic accidents often occur in this area because vehicles are not familiar with the road or cannot avoid the potholes in time. People living along the road have repeatedly brought rocks to temporarily fill the holes.
Another damaged spot is at Km8+878 bridge in Nam Gia Nghia ward. Right at the bridge abutment, there are many deep holes while this is a downhill section, with no warning signs. Drivers said that heavy trucks have to brake so hard when going downhill that they “are about to burn”, while family cars that crash into the holes cause strong shocks and can easily damage the chassis.
Seeing the damaged areas, drivers warned each other on social media and sent petitions to local authorities. Local residents also repeatedly requested road repairs during voter meetings. However, the road was only temporarily “patched” and quickly became damaged again.

Gia Nghia bypass was put into use in April 2018. At the end of 2023, the Ho Chi Minh road section through Bac Gia Nghia ward was eroded and damaged. To reduce the load on the eroded road section, local authorities have regulated heavy trucks over 7 tons to pass through Gia Nghia urban bypass. However, since then, Gia Nghia bypass has rapidly deteriorated, becoming a concern for road users and local residents.
According to the Traffic Police Department of Lam Dong Province, there are many large-scale damaged areas on the Gia Nghia urban bypass, causing frequent traffic jams and posing potential safety risks to road users. The Traffic Police regularly patrol and have repeatedly proactively requested temporary reinforcement of severely damaged areas to repair them. However, this is only a temporary solution, and the effectiveness only lasts a few days. Because the roadbed is weak, a fundamental repair is needed.
The People's Committee of Bac Gia Nghia Ward said that the main cause of the road damage was heavy rain combined with a sudden increase in the density of heavy trucks. Previously, this road section was "patched" with local funds. Currently, the local government is developing a plan to supplement funding to comprehensively repair the severely damaged areas to ensure traffic safety.
