Application of science and technology to build a model for seed production and commercial farming of earthworms (Tylorrhynchus heterochaetus) in Hai Phong

On the morning of August 8, 2025, the Department of Science and Technology of Hai Phong organized a consultation conference to evaluate and accept locally the results of the project under the Rural and Mountainous Areas Program for the period 2016-2025 "Application of science and technology to build a model for seed production and commercial farming of earthworms (Tylorrhynchus heterochaetus) in Hai Phong".

The project is implemented by Vu Gia Aquaculture and Processing Company Limited, with Engineer Pham Thi Le Ngoc as the project manager. Dr. Pham Thi Dao, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, is the Council Chairwoman.

Reporting on the project implementation results, the representative of the Management Board said that the project has received 02 technology processes transferred from the Northern National Center for Marine Breeding, including: the process of producing rươi seeds and the process of commercial rươi farming through training, coaching and model implementation. The implementation results have trained 10 technicians to master the process, organized 02 training courses for 100 participants and 04 field workshops, sharing experiences with the provinces of Thai Binh , Nghe An, Ha Tinh.

Regarding the model of seed production and commercial farming of earthworms, seed production was carried out on a scale of 3,000 ^m2 of nursery ponds, producing 280 million seeds in 02 years. The survival rate to the seed stage averaged 16.05%; the quality of the seeds was good and disease-free. The commercial farming model was carried out on a total area of ​​50 hectares in 02 years, giving an average survival rate of earthworms >75.52%; the average yield was 0.743 tons/ha/year; the total output was 38 tons. Commercial earthworms met VietGAP standards, ensuring food safety.

With the implementation of 02 models, the project revenue reached 12.3 billion VND, of which seed production reached 2.8 billion VND, commercial farming reached 9.5 billion VND. The project profit brought in 4.3 billion VND, net profit ratio of 14.7% compared to revenue.

The project implementation results were unanimously accepted by the local Council. However, to complete the project implementation results report before submitting it to the State Council for evaluation and acceptance, the Steering Committee needs to edit and supplement some contents such as: supplementing the legal documents of the 02 technological processes; clarifying the new points of the 02 processes when applied in practice in the locality; reviewing and unifying the data; supplementing the set of guidance documents, recommending people to deploy and replicate the model; calculating the indicators of profit margin, net profit and capital recovery time when implementing the model...
