Research on restoring resources of some seaweed species in Bach Long Vi Marine Reserve

On the afternoon of August 29, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of Hai Phong city organized an Advisory Council to select and implement a city-level S&T task: "Research on restoring resources of some species of seaweed in Bach Long Vi Marine Reserve".

The unit with valid documents to register to host the implementation is the Institute of Marine Research. The conference was chaired by Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology Pham Thi Sen Quynh.

Conference scene.

Seaweed is an important source of raw materials in the food and pharmaceutical industries. It also plays an important role in protecting biodiversity, creating habitats and breeding grounds for many aquatic species. Seaweed restoration will contribute to improving the quality of the marine environment, creating livelihoods for fishermen and promoting the development of the blue marine economy in Hai Phong.

The Institute of Marine Research has set the following goals: to study and evaluate the current distribution and density of seaweed in Hai Phong sea areas; to identify the main causes of seaweed resource decline; to test models of seaweed propagation, regeneration and restoration in the natural environment of Bach Long Vi Marine Reserve; to propose solutions to protect, exploit and sustainably develop seaweed species in the locality.

At the Conference, the Institute of Marine Research presented the topic and tasks with the following contents: Overview of research   Theoretical basis and practical issues; Research on selecting seaweed species for propagation and restoration; developing technical processes for seaweed propagation by spores as well as technical processes for seaweed restoration; Experimenting with seaweed propagation techniques by spores and seaweed restoration techniques at Bach Long Vi Marine Reserve.

The Council members highly appreciated the urgency and practical significance of the task, and at the same time exchanged and contributed ideas for the research team to supplement and perfect the topic such as: Proposing to adjust the topic name; clarifying the novelty and urgency of the topic; supplementing scientific research works to have a basis for selective inheritance; supplementing new related legal bases; field methods; selecting endemic seaweed species with high economic value for propagation and conservation; having scientific articles in prestigious journals.

At the end of the Conference, the Advisory Council unanimously approved the tasks and requested the Institute of Marine Research to receive comments, edit and complete the dossier according to regulations./.
