Tuyen Quang: Opportunity to restructure the tourism industry

After the merger of the provinces, the space for tourism development in Tuyen Quang - Ha Giang has been expanded not only geographically but also in terms of strategic vision. This place will become a new growth pole of tourism in the midland and mountainous regions of the North.

Catching up with the historic merger

Ha Giang , the sacred northernmost region of the country with Lung Cu flagpole, Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, majestic Ma Pi Leng pass, Hoang Su Phi terraced fields, Quan Ba twin mountains... Here, the Mong, Lo Lo, Nung people... have woven a unique, colorful cultural symphony.

Tuyen Quang, a revolutionary homeland with famous tourist destinations such as the Tan Trao and Kim Binh National Special Relic Sites; with the mysterious Na Hang - Lam Binh hydroelectric lake, the silent Tat Ke - Ban Bung forest, where Then culture blends with people's hearts. In particular, the Thanh Tuyen Festival, a colorful Mid-Autumn Festival, has set three Vietnamese Guinness records, becoming a unique cultural brand that is rare to find anywhere else.

Each place has its own unique features, when connected, it will create a seamless heritage space, rich in identity, and diverse in experiences. This is a golden opportunity to redesign the regional development strategy, putting the tourism industry on a professional and sustainable trajectory.

Mr. Le Thanh Son, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Tuyen Quang province, commented: “After the merger, we will not only have more resources, but also have the conditions to shape the regional tourism space with a large-scale natural and cultural ecosystem that complements each other. This is the basis for planning preferential policies, investment planning, and positioning the common brand of Tuyen Quang - Ha Giang tourism”.

Tuyen Quang has a deep cultural history, strengths in community and ecological tourism; Ha Giang possesses unique landscapes, majestic nature and rich national identity. When connected, the two lands can form a strong tourism brand, creating resonance in communication, investment, building unique tours and different product chains.

Increase connectivity, create product and service chains

According to statistics in 2024, Tuyen Quang welcomed more than 2.7 million visitors with revenue of about 3,600 billion VND. Ha Giang welcomed over 3.2 million visitors, revenue exceeding 8,100 billion VND, a number that proves the special attraction of tourism in the far North. However, a big question is raised: How to not only accumulate data, but actually create a "green heritage tourism area" with a harmonious - different - connected identity?

Mr. Nguyen Van Trai, Director of Ha Giang Tre Tourism Company, shared: “About 70% of our guests are from the South, often staying for a long time. The merger opens up opportunities to build tours stretching from Ha Giang to Tuyen Quang, enhancing experiences, increasing length of stay and stimulating consumption. We look forward to further cooperation with tourism agencies in Tuyen Quang to develop together.”

Sharing the same wish, Mr. Luong Duy Doanh, Director of Fivestar Travel Company, who operates a homestay chain in Lam Binh, said: “To attract customers, the tour must be attractive and connected. One cannot do it alone, it requires the joint efforts of all parties, from travel agencies to people, from the government to tourism experts”. According to Mr. Doanh, the important thing is to have an inter-regional tourism coordination center where all information is updated, connecting services throughout, helping tourists easily access and experience.

From a professional perspective, MSc. Hoang Thi The, Lecturer of the Faculty of Culture and Tourism, Tan Trao University, affirmed: “Merger is not just a geographical mechanism, but an opportunity to restructure tourism in depth, from connecting historical and cultural heritage (Tuyen Quang) with ecological landscapes and national identities (Ha Giang). This will be a journey of two nuances, not overlapping, but resonant and specialized”. MSc. Hoang Thi The also emphasized the role of digital transformation and training of local human resources “Each village, each homestay needs to improve skills, communication, and digital management to proactively keep up with the trend of smart tourism. People are not only service providers but also creative subjects in the value chain”.

Ms. Ta Thi Phi Ha, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City who has experienced both Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang, shared: “Each place has its own charm, but lacks connection. If there is a journey from Tan Trao - Na Hang to Lung Cu - Dong Van, from the softness of Tay culture to the excitement of Meo Vac market, it would truly be a dream tour”. Ms. Ha also said: “There should be a common brand for the region, with a consistent story, an emotional map so that wherever tourists go, they can find themselves in a seamless flow of culture - history - people”.

However, besides great potential, there are still bottlenecks: Traffic infrastructure is not yet synchronized, many routes such as Bac Me - Lam Binh, National Highway 279 need to be renovated and upgraded. Gam River waterway has not been effectively exploited. Tourism infrastructure such as accommodation facilities and experience services are still limited.

Mr. Sinh Di Gai, Head of Lo Lo Chai Village, Lung Cu Commune, said: “We are familiar with community tourism, but tourists need new experiences. If we are supported with training on farmstays and improved service and accommodation quality, I believe tourists will stay longer.”

It can be seen that the merger of Tuyen Quang - Ha Giang is not simply a geographical connection, but a resonance between identity - resources - aspirations. One side is the source of the revolution, the other side is the sacred northernmost point, the headland of the Fatherland. To turn potential into reality, we need a smart, integrated regional strategy, where the government plays a coordinating role, businesses are the guides, people are the owners and tourists are the center of the experience. If we can do that, the "green heritage belt" of Tuyen Quang - Ha Giang will not only be a destination on the tourist map, but a journey to arouse pride and nurture love for the homeland in every step of the journey.
