Despite challenges from the global supply chain and trade tensions with the US, Toyota has just set a new sales record in May 2025 with nearly 900,000 vehicles sold globally. This is the fifth consecutive month that the Japanese automaker has recorded sales growth, reflecting a strong recovery from the pandemic and the ability to quickly adapt to market fluctuations.

Specifically, Toyota sold 898,721 vehicles in May, up 6.9% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, total production reached about 890,000 vehicles, down slightly by 0.7% due to partial capacity cuts at domestic factories. However, sales growth still exceeded expectations, thanks to increased purchasing power in major markets such as North America, China and domestic Japan.

In North America, Toyota’s largest export market, sales increased by 11%, while market share in China remained stable amid growing competition from domestic electric car manufacturers. In Japan, consumers tended to return to domestic cars, especially hybrids, Toyota’s inherent strength.

Behind the positive numbers, however, lies the growing pressure from the new US tax policy. Car exports from Japan to the US in May fell more than 24% in value, although the number of exported cars fell by less than 4%. This shows that most of the tax costs are being absorbed by manufacturers like Toyota, rather than passed on to consumers.

However, Toyota still maintains a flexible development strategy: combining traditional gasoline vehicles, hybrids and electric vehicles, instead of rushing into the EV trend like many Western competitors. With a wide production network, effective cost management and a diverse product portfolio, Toyota continues to show its resilience and initiative in the midst of global competition.

In a world where the global auto industry remains volatile, especially with EVs, Toyota's May results are not only a record, but also a testament to how a long-standing corporation can continually adapt and lead in a sustainable and methodical way.
