According to the announcement on June 3 by the French President's Office, French President Emmanuel Macron will meet with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva within the framework of the Summit on the new global financial pact.

At the conference, leaders from many countries will discuss key topics that have a significant impact on the global economy and the future of international cooperation.

The conference is expected to push forward reform of multilateral development banks, tackle the debt crisis, finance green technology, establish new international taxes and financial instruments and special drawing rights.

In another development, according to Reuters , President Lula da Silva said on June 2 that Brasilia will not sign the tariff reduction trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the South American Common Market (Mercosur) without adjustments.

The country will not open up to public procurement under the deal as the EU wants.

Stressing to Finnish President Sauli Ninisto at a meeting a day earlier, Mr. Lula expressed hope for a “balanced” trade agreement between Mercosur and the EU, which would support Brazil’s push for reindustrialization and sustainable development.

The EU and Mercosur - whose members are Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay - reached a framework agreement on the FTA in 2019 after two decades of difficult negotiations.

However, this document has not yet been ratified. The reason is that Europe is concerned about the destruction of the Amazon forest, as well as skepticism about the climate change policy under President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), Lula da Silva's predecessor.

In addition, some European countries with strong agricultural sectors, such as France, are reluctant to open their markets to competing agricultural products from the Mercosur bloc.
