After 2 years of absence from the big screen, he returned with a villain role in the horror film “Ut Lan: Oan linh tro cu”. Was his silence all this time due to a lack of suitable invitations, or because he became more careful in choosing scripts?
- When I came back, what I wanted most was to find a character with a new color, different from my image in the 10 years of my career. Initially, I didn't plan to stop acting for 2 years, but I kept waiting for a good role, so for 2 years I rarely appeared on screen.
During that time, I was also sad, seeing my colleagues filming made me feel a little sad. Recently, I accepted to participate in a few game show To keep the passion for the profession, I act in a segment in the films of directors close to me.
Stopping acting for 2 years could make the audience forget you, affect your performance, and reduce your income. Have you ever anticipated that?
- For many years, I have been running around on a work schedule, filming from morning till night, recording entertainment shows so densely that I only get home late at night. I just keep getting caught up in the schedule of accepting movies, filming, and going on shows. When I realized that there were parts where I acted awkwardly and "blandly". If I let myself drift, sooner or later the audience would find my face boring. From then on, I decided to only accept new game shows and different, unique roles.
Certainly, when I work less, my income also decreases. When I work day and night, I can provide for my family more fully. Now, I still live in a rented house, not to the point of being well-off. But when I confide in my wife, she is very understanding and always accompanies me.
Some people say that Mac Van Khoa's special appearance is both an advantage and a disadvantage. What is your opinion?
- Since I was a child, I was self-conscious about my appearance, because I was always the “ugliest” person in my group of friends. But since I had the chance to act in a play in 8th grade, I started to love acting and practicing plays. I started to be more open, participated in plays at school and in the commune, and thanks to that, I was no longer self-conscious.
Going through the journey from struggling days of performing to becoming famous, what role did family play in your career?
- Actually, I am also an introvert, I don't communicate much or go out with friends. When I was young, my parents were afraid that I was shy. When I practiced drama and became happier, my parents were very happy and often went to see me perform. However, when I took the entrance exam to Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema, I failed the first round. That was a big shock to me, making me realize that acting was very difficult, my appearance was very picky and my experience in acting was nothing. My parents were also sad, because my friends were all in college or vocational school. That summer, I was also discouraged, and applied to work at a leather shoe company near my house. The next year I took the exam again, studying Stage Directing in Nha Trang.
Then after 3 years of studying, I was shocked again because I didn’t know what to do with my degree in hand. I went to the South to look for opportunities and experienced my first jobs. Just when I was about to leave to work abroad, luck smiled on me. I won the 2015 Laughter Across Vietnam contest and began to be known. During that time, I was always grateful to my parents for always supporting and encouraging me not to give up, even though the cost of studying was very expensive.
At the age of over 30, Mac Van Khoa has a happy family with his wife and daughter. Laughter Across Vietnam 2015 was also a chance for him to meet his wife. How can you describe the companionship of your wife?
- She was the first audience member to ask to take a photo with me. After a period of getting to know each other, she became my wife (laughs). From the time we dated until the birth of our child, my wife always went to work with me, taking care of me and supporting me. I was also always clear in my work, never letting my wife be upset because of interactions with female co-stars. My wife and I both believe that loyalty is the most important thing, in love and marriage.
Over the years, my wife has always followed my roles, giving me advice and encouragement. She was also a big motivation for me to take on the villain role in “Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Ca”.
Thanks Mac Van Khoa for the chat!
