When the light fades and sadness creeps into the family
The story of Ms. Tran Thi Xuan is one of many touching and meaningful entries submitted to the contest "Experience in family health care". The contest is organized by Dan Tri newspaper in collaboration with Thu Cuc TCI Healthcare System, attracting the participation of many readers.
Xuan’s father, now 70 years old, is an active and life-loving man. He likes reading newspapers, playing chess, badminton and especially cooking warm dinners for his children and grandchildren. However, over time, his eyesight has become increasingly dim, and his favorite habits have gradually disappeared.
"My dad turned on the computer and then turned it off because he couldn't read it anymore. He left chess games unfinished, his badminton racket couldn't be used anymore, and he couldn't pick vegetables to cook dinner for his children," Ms. Xuan recounted.
The abandoned hobbies made the once cheerful father become pensive and uncertain. Occasionally, Ms. Xuan caught him turning away as if to hide his teary eyes. Witnessing that scene, no one in the family felt at ease. That was when they realized that the eyes were not only the window to the father's soul, but also the light and joy of the whole family.

The story touches the hearts of many readers because of its authenticity and positive message about the journey to preserve the light for the eyes (Illustration: Freepik).
Timely decision and the miracle of light
Without hesitation, Ms. Xuan's family took her father to the hospital for a check-up. There, after a thorough examination, the doctor diagnosed her father with cataracts, a common disease in the elderly, and prescribed surgery to replace the lens with an artificial lens. "After researching and consulting with many people, my family quickly decided to agree to do the surgery for my father," she said.
The success of her father's surgery has motivated Xuan's family to focus more on eye care. He can see more clearly, read newspapers, and move around comfortably without needing as much support as before. The feeling of glare when going out in the sun or straining his eyes to watch TV is gone. The best thing is that the hobbies that he thought he had to put aside are now being started again. "My family is very happy that my father can return to his daily activities normally and happily," she said.

Family is the most solid support, and taking care of the health of loved ones is the way we build a complete home.
Ms. Xuan has summarized valuable experiences: from strictly following the doctor's instructions on medication and follow-up visits, to keeping the eyes clean and protecting them from external factors with sunglasses. A reasonable diet with foods rich in vitamins A, C, E and omega-3, along with a moderate lifestyle (limiting electronic devices, light exercise, getting enough sleep).
She also emphasized the role of a relaxed spirit and the care and encouragement from her children and grandchildren as an invaluable spiritual medicine to help her father recover more quickly. "The most important thing is early detection, proper treatment and careful post-operative care - to keep your parents' eyes bright and healthy, helping them enjoy their old age to the fullest and happily," she said, sending her message from her heart.
