Trinh Mai Linh, student of Trieu Son 3 High School - Top student of Thanh Hoa province, block D01.
From "3 good" student at Central level to national runner-up
With a total score of 28 points in block D01 (Math 9.5; English 9.75 and Literature 8.75), Trinh Mai Linh, class 12A39, Trieu Son 3 High School is the student with the 4th highest score in block D01 nationwide, 3rd highest in the North and 1st highest in Thanh Hoa province. With this score, Mai Linh became the national runner-up and the provincial valedictorian of block D01. In addition, she also has IELTS 7.5; SAT 1,510/1,600.
Not only creating sympathy with her pretty face and sweet voice, Trinh Mai Linh also made a special impression with her academic achievements that were typical of "other people's children".
In grade 10, Mai Linh was the only student in Thanh Hoa province to win the title of “3 good students” at the central level. In grade 11, Mai Linh made a video to participate in the “Teacher in my eyes” contest organized by theeducation sector and won first prize at the provincial level and an encouragement prize at the national level. What is special is that this video is about her math teacher, who is also her father.
Passionate about Math and English. From the age of 4, Mai Linh began to learn English through listening to English songs. Throughout her junior high and high school years, she was trained in the English gifted student team. In three years of high school, Linh continuously won second prize in the provincial English gifted student competition. In particular, in grade 10, she skipped a level, competed with her seniors in grade 12 and won second prize in this competition.
Mai Linh confided that she has no “secret” to being good at English, mainly due to hard work and accumulating knowledge over a long period of time, so she naturally formed a reflex for this subject. From the beginning, she chose not to take extra classes but to self-study for certificates. Notably, she self-studied for IELTS and SAT certificates, entering the top 1% of test takers with the highest SAT scores in the world for the 2024 exam.
“To both study and entertain, I often listen to music, watch movies, and watch comedy shows in English. Besides, I also often use AI to study. To me, AI is like a friend, a teacher to discuss lessons with. Of course, you have to be selective because not all the information that AI has is completely accurate. If you know how to place orders and use AI, it will be very good for studying,” Mai Linh said.

Talking about the 2025 High School Graduation Exam, Mai Linh shared: “In Math, I got the “block 10” question wrong. I’m a little regretful because I didn’t consider carefully and missed one case, so I lost 10 points. For English, I also got the last question wrong. This year’s Literature exam was very good, with a lot of “land” to exploit. Becoming the valedictorian of the whole province, block D01, was beyond my expectations. I was so happy that I cried when I found out I was the valedictorian.”
Mai Linh plans to apply for the first choice of the Faculty of Foreign Economics, Foreign Trade University, Hanoi. However, even though she got 28 points in block D01, she may not need to use the 2025 high school graduation exam score for admission but can use the converted score from SAT, IELTS or excellent student exam score and transcript for admission.
An ideal learning environment creates good academic performance.
Both Linh's parents are teachers working at Trieu Son 3 High School. Her father - Mr. Trinh Quoc Phuong - was also his daughter's Math teacher for all 3 years of high school.
Mr. Phuong shared: “Although I am my child's direct Math teacher, I do not supervise her studies, nor do I set goals beyond her ability, but only guide, observe, and support her when needed. She is completely proactive and arranges her studies. Luckily, Mai Linh has the ability to self-study and is proactive in finding learning resources and tools. Especially with English, she often goes online to ask for learning and test-taking experiences, asks for SAT test-taking materials from seniors, and studies online with teachers. Even when taking the SAT test in Hanoi, she took the test by herself without her parents accompanying her.”

In class 12A39, directly taught by teacher Trinh Quoc Phuong, there are 41 students, of which 20 students scored 9 points or higher in Math, 1 student scored 10 points, and the average Math score of the class was nearly 8.23 points, higher than the average Math score of the whole country (the average Math score of the whole country is 4.78 points).
According to Mr. Phuong: "For any subject, self-study and self-study with the support of teachers are the "essence" of the problem. It's like watering a tree, you have to water it slowly so that the water can seep into the roots of the tree, but if you pour it in hastily, the water will all flow away. The same goes for studying, you have to study slowly to have time to think and practice your skills."
The 2024-2025 school year is a very proud milestone of success for teachers and students of Trieu Son 3 High School. In the 2025 high school graduation exam, the school's educational quality continued to affirm its position with an average graduation score of 7.4034 points, predicted to rank 3rd in Thanh Hoa province and the highest ever for the school.
In particular, the school has many students with outstanding high scores. Among them, there is 1 student with 29.5 points in block A00, one of the top students in the province; 1 student with 28 points in block D01 and is the valedictorian of this block in the province; 2 students with 29 points or more in the combination of 3 subjects for university entrance; 6 students with 28.5 points or more; 17 students with 28 points or more; 30 students with 27.5 points or more and 41 students with 27 points or more.
This is the result of the persistent efforts of the entire staff, teachers, employees and students of the school. At the same time, it demonstrates the close attention of the Party Committee, local authorities, departments, organizations as well as the close support and coordination from parents.
Teacher Le Van Quynh, Principal of Trieu Son 3 High School said: “There are many factors that contribute to success, but the most important is the solidarity, dedication and high level of expertise of the staff, teachers and employees in the school. In addition, the school has a systematic, scientific review strategy, individualizing students, close to the capacity and goals of each student, with attention and creating conditions in all aspects from the locality, parents and social forces... In addition, the school also always pays attention to comprehensive education, not only focusing on studying but also training ethics and life skills for students. That is the important foundation for students to develop their personal capacity well in exams as well as in life later on”.
