VHO - The Office of the Hue City People's Committee said that the locality has reported to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism the results of implementing the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh on the case of the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty throne, being violated.
According to report No. 6730 of Hue City People's Committee, immediately after the incident occurred, local leaders directed the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and other units to implement related contents according to the direction of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
After the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism agreed, the City People's Committee established a Council to assess the status and propose a plan to preserve and restore the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne. On June 1, the Council held an assessment meeting to propose the contents.
Hue City People's Committee will continue to report to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to consider and decide on a plan to preserve and restore the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne, in accordance with regulations.
According to the Hue City People's Committee, in June 2025, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center will complete and deploy a detailed protection plan for each national treasure currently stored at the Center.
In particular, focus on ensuring adequate measures to prevent theft, fire, explosion, natural disasters and other risks of damage to ensure absolute safety for national treasures.
At the same time, the locality will also conduct a comprehensive review of the management, security, safety, and display of relics, antiquities, and national treasures of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center as well as the management of relics in the city and will report the results to the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism before June 6, 2025.
The Hue City People's Committee will prioritize investment in renovating and upgrading works, technical infrastructure, and investing in specialized equipment for displaying and preserving artifacts and the area displaying national treasures at the Hue Monuments Conservation Center.
Promote the application of new technology and artificial intelligence in monitoring management such as: early warning sensor systems, virtual fences, security monitoring systems... to ensure that national treasures are placed in special preservation regimes according to the instructions of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
To date, Hue city has 14 artifacts/sets of artifacts with 41 individual artifacts recognized as national treasures. Particularly at the relic sites belonging to the Complex of Hue Monuments, there are 12 artifacts/sets of artifacts with 38 individual artifacts that are national treasures; the remaining 2 national treasures are being kept at the Hue City History Museum.
Large national treasures, currently on display in “open spaces” such as: Nine Cannons, Nine Urns, 11 bronze cauldrons from the Nguyen Dynasty, Khiem Cung Stele, Dai Hong Chung, “Ngu kien Thien Mu Tu” stele... have also been violated by tourists such as touching, drawing, and carving characters.
Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, said: The national treasures at the Hue heritage site are very diverse in materials, sizes, and weights; from bronze, wood, stone, jade, fabric, etc. And each type has a different type and protection method. Up to now, the center has basically developed a master plan based on current regulations and the 2024 Law on Cultural Heritage, which will take effect from July 1, and will report to the Hue City People's Committee.
According to the report, the City People's Committee has organized a review, drawn lessons and handled the responsibilities of individuals and organizations related to the violation of the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne.
In particular, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center reviewed and drew profound experience before the leaders of the City People's Committee; reviewed and severely criticized the Center's Protection Management Department and the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum.
Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center Hoang Viet Trung and three Deputy Directors, Mr. Phan Van Tuan, Nguyen Phuoc Hai Trung and Le Cong Son, reviewed and drew profound lessons before the leaders of the Hue City People's Committee.
Regarding the staff on duty on May 24 at Thai Hoa Palace, security guards Dang Quang Long and Dao Hoang Vu, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center decided to discipline them by dismissing them. In addition, the team leader and deputy team leader of the Thai Hoa Palace - Ta Huu Vu - Kien Trung Palace security team were also disciplined with a reprimand.
Regarding this incident, Hue City Police have initiated a case, prosecuted the accused and issued an order to temporarily detain Ho Van Phuong Tam (42 years old, from Huong Long ward, Phu Xuan district, Hue city) for 3 months for the crime of "Intentionally damaging property" according to point C, clause 2, Article 178 of the Penal Code.
Previously, on May 24, Ho Van Phuong Tam sneaked into the area displaying national treasures, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne at Thai Hoa Palace, sat on the throne, and broke the armrest (left side) into many pieces.
