Last week saw a movie release on August 15 with notable names such as Demon Slayer: Infinite City, Sticky, Freaky Friday, Anonymous 2 and I have a disease that makes me like you.
Demon Slayer Explodes
Based on data of The Box Office Vietnam, Demon Slayer: Infinite City led the Vietnamese box office, earning 61.7 billion VND last weekend, bringing the total revenue to 84.3 billion VND after 3 days in theaters (plus early screenings). The film had about 4,000 screenings per day, completely overwhelming other blockbusters.
In Japan, Demon Slayer: Infinite City was released on July 18 and held the top spot at the box office for 4 consecutive weeks. After 25 days of release, the film reached 22 billion yen with more than 15.6 million viewers, officially surpassing One Piece Film Red to rank 6th in the list of highest-grossing films in Japanese history.
This is the first part of a trilogy of films that concludes the entire story of Demon Slayer, takes the audience to the final battle between the pillars and the Twelve Demon Moons inside the giant labyrinth - the headquarters of the demon lord Muzan Kibutsuji.
The film brings a satisfying experience to viewers. Even audiences who know the manga by heart will still be overwhelmed by the way Ufotable combines 2D and 3D to create an unpredictable fortress.
Viewers are sucked into that maze, only having a chance to stop and breathe when the battle breaks out. This is a testament to the boundless imagination of Japanese action manga: epic, brilliant and captivating.
Since it's a direct adaptation of the manga, the film can't really explain the psychology of all the characters. Many of the Pillars and supporting characters like Giyu and Kanao only appear briefly. But focusing on Shinobu, Zenitsu, and Akaza makes the story clearer and more accessible to the audience. It's a smart strategy.
Abandoning mother surpasses 160 billion VND mark
Number 2 box office position is Mang Me Di Bo earned 10.8 billion VND last weekend with 1,000 screenings per day, raising total revenue to 161.2 billion VND after more than half a month in theaters.
This is the first Vietnamese film in history to achieve this feat in August - a time considered the low season for the Vietnamese box office.
Take mother away will be released in North America on August 28 and in Australia and New Zealand on September 11. In Korea, the film is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year.
Number 3 at the box office is Together, pocketed 4.7 billion VND after 3 days in theaters. Currently, the film has 400 screenings per day. The film has a body horror theme, somewhat similar to last year's blockbuster. The Substance , to the point of being likened to "sisters of the same system".
The plot revolves around Tim and Millie, a couple of 10 years in a relationship whose feelings are fading. In an attempt to save their relationship from the brink of collapse, Tim and Millie move to a peaceful countryside.
While walking in the woods near their home, they accidentally drink water from a strange pond in a cave. From then on, their bodies begin to fuse together, both physically and psychologically, in bizarre and increasingly uncontrollable ways.
On their journey to combat this terrifying phenomenon, the couple discovers a shocking secret behind it and is forced to face a choice: love or physical destruction?
