Grandma's roasted garlic in the ghost month

My grandmother passed away a long time ago, but I still clearly remember the "baked garlic in foil" dish she made every time the weather changed, especially during the ghost month. She didn't say much, just said: "The sky is yin, people must be yang. Eat a clove of roasted garlic, your stomach will be warm, your head will be less foggy."

She took some aluminum foil, wrapped some cloves of garlic with the skin still on, and put them in a charcoal grill or small oven. The smell of cooked garlic wafted through the kitchen – lightly fragrant, not strong, not as spicy as raw garlic. The roasted garlic was soft, had a strange sweet taste, and warmed from the mouth to the stomach.

Later, when I grew up, I learned more about medicine, and learned that roasted garlic will reduce allicin, retain essential oils, not harm the stomach, and is easier to digest. Yet, without any research, my grandmother, with just intuition and folk experience, with a slow life, knew how to preserve the family's yang energy with a rustic dish of roasted garlic, which is both cheap and inexpensive.

Eat garlic properly to maintain yang energy, not superstitious

In health care, garlic is a "spicy flavor that circulates the qi", helping to prevent colds, warm the spleen and stomach, and repel cold air - especially on gloomy days when people are easily tired. But eating garlic also needs to be done properly to have good effects.

The best time to eat garlic (especially roasted garlic) is in the 7th lunar month - the 'ghost month' and on cold days, when you need yang energy):

Eat roasted garlic in the morning

After meals, use cooked garlic or honey garlic to increase resistance and blood circulation.

Eat roasted garlic in the afternoon

Before sunset, a roasted garlic clove helps warm the stomach, good for the faint-hearted, those who have just returned from a long trip, a funeral, cemetery, hospital...

Note: Do not eat late at night because it can stimulate digestion, cause bloating and insomnia.

However, according to medical research, there are people who should avoid eating garlic and dishes made from garlic. Specifically:

Reasons to avoid

Alternative suggestions

People with gastric and duodenal ulcers

Raw garlic is hot and spicy and can easily irritate mucous membranes.

Use roasted garlic, softened to reduce the pungency.

People with low blood pressure

Garlic can cause a slight drop in blood pressure when used in large amounts.

Take low dose, eat healthy breakfast

People taking anticoagulants

Garlic is a natural blood thinner, which can interact with medications.

Limit raw garlic; ask your doctor before regular use.

People with diarrhea, weak stomach

Garlic stimulates digestion, but for people with diarrhea it can make it worse.

Use roasted garlic or light garlic porridge, less

Pregnant women – first 3 months

Too much garlic can cause mild cramps (rarely serious, but be careful)

Use small doses, cook thoroughly, do not use raw garlic.

Children under 1 year old

The stomach is not developed enough to handle the spicy taste and strong essential oils from garlic.

Garlic oil can be used externally (massage), do not eat directly.

If you are not sure if roasted garlic is suitable for you or your loved ones, eat a very small amount - preferably soft, fragrant garlic. Garlic - especially roasted garlic - is very good for your health, listen to your body before adding garlic to your meal.

Eating garlic is not to avoid "evil spirits", but to get closer to yourself and warm your heart, dispelling smoldering anxiety and insecurity. Garlic is not a charm - but a symbol of motherly love, of a warm kitchen, of someone who once took care of you with the pungent smell of garlic.

So, in the afternoon of the ghost month, if you feel tired, feel cold in the house, feel sad and uneasy... wrap a few cloves of garlic, put them in the oven, pour a cup of hot tea, and sit quietly waiting for the aroma to spread. Or soak a jar of garlic and honey in advance and use it. Or simply cook a bowl of hot garlic porridge to eat, which is the best way to keep the warm yang energy for yourself, for your home and your loved ones.

How to prepare delicious, easy, non-pungent garlic

1. Grilled garlic in foil :

Peel off the outer layer (keep the silk layer close to the shrimp).

Wrap each clove or whole bulb in foil.

Bake for 10–15 minutes at 180°C (electric oven) or small charcoal grill.

When the garlic is soft and fragrant, it is ready to use.

The effect of this dish is to warm the stomach, reduce cough, easy to digest, and does not harm the stomach.

2. Honey-soaked garlic (use in the morning)

Slice thinly or leave whole cloves, soak in pure honey for 7-10 days.

Drink 1 spoon every morning, good for lungs, intestines, reduces flu.

3. Garlic porridge (calms children)

Cook white porridge, add 3-4 crushed garlic cloves when the porridge is almost cooked.

Eat hot, easy to sleep, help soothe the mind after a tiring day.
